PROFILE
Storied career
WHERE DID YOU GROW UP
AND GO TO SCHOOL?
I grew up in southern Missouri near
Joplin, and I went to school at Oklahoma
State University.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN
WITH THE COLONY?
15 years. I’ve had a number of careers,
and I’ll be retiring soon.
WHAT ALL DO YOU DO
ATTHE COLONY?
My original job was to be in charge of
the solid waste and recycling program
in the city. That morphed into facility
maintenance and then traffic control. Then
as we started getting new facilities I was
in charge of new construction. And I’ve
overseen the construction of Fire Station
No. 4. I’ve liked all of these different roles.
They’ve all had challenges, and that’s what
I’ve liked about them.
WHAT HAVE BEEN
SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE
PROGRAMS YOUR DEPART-
MENT HAS IMPLEMENTED/
OVERSEEN OVERTHEYEARS?
With our solid waste recycling, I’m
proud of the fact that we’ve grown in that
area. It’s a good program, even though
we’re facing challenges. We offer green
waste pickup, bulk pickup and we provide
residents with compost.
WHAT HAVE BEEN SOME
OF THE MOST INTEREST-
ING CHANGES YOU’VE SEEN
TO THE CITY IN YOUR TIME
HERE?
We took off and started developing, like
with Grandscape. That’s something that
will benefit the city from here on out and
Gilman
talks
about
roles
with
city,
book
collection
provide revenue to make The Colony one of
the best cities in North Texas. We devel-
oped the site when nobody said we would.
We've been able to put the city on the
national radar with everything we're doing.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE
STORY ABOUTTHE COLONY’S
HISTORY?
I'm a history buff, and I read and study
/T Prry Gilman has
I had his ha nds in
. many different
projects during his time
with the city of The
Colony. He is currently
the environmental
and facility manager
2 but has served several
e roles with the city. He
* also has a passion for
books and has helped
a certain country and
western band during their
early days of perform-
ing.
a lot of history. I like that the city’s roots
come from Peters Colony, which helped
develop Texas. I’m proud that The Colony
was a part of that. It was eons ago, but it
was a part of the development of Texas.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST EXCIT-
ED ABOUT REGARDING THE
NEW FIRE STATION?
It’s going to be state of the art. It will
have five bays, meaning it will be the larg-
est one we have. It’ll provide fire protec-
tion and first responders to all of Grand-
scape, Austin Ranch and areas east of SH
121. It’ll make a big difference in response
times. We’ll have adequate staff to handle
anything that goes on over there.
WHAT DO YOU LIKE TO DO IN
YOUR FREE TIME?
I’m an avid reader and book collector.
My wife and I have a book collection that
has a volume of about 25,000. We’re going
to have to figure out how to move those. I
like to collect books that are no longer in
print - books about war, political history,
history of different countries, science
fiction and other types of fiction are my
favorites.
WHO’S YOUR
FAVORITE TEAM, AND HOW
WILL THEY DO THIS YEAR?
I’ve been an OSU fan since I graduat-
ed from OSU. They’re by far my favorite
college team. OSU should do fairly well this
next season. I also like the Dallas Cowboys.
FAVORITE MUSICIAN?
I like country and western. I grew up
listening to rock and roll in the 1960s. I
still like it, but when we moved to Texas
we got involved in the country and western
scene. We even helped support Miranda
Lambert. We helped develop her website,
we supported them with money when they
struggled to get from venue to venue, we
donated generously to their tip jar and we
helped them financially when they were
fixing their RV.
FAVORITE TV SHOW?
I’ve always liked the “Star Trek” shows.
I’m still a big fan. I get interested whenev-
er a new version comes out.
