Keys to success
Ko Eun Jeoung
talks about musical
accomplishments
with piano
FT There is an internationally accomplished pianist in The Colo-
1 ny Ko Eun Jeoung recently won first prize in the Paderews-
. ki International Piano Competition in the Professional
Category in Farmington, Connecticut. Before that she performed
at Carnegie Hall as one of the March 2019 Golden Classical Music
Awards invited winners for winning first prize in the piano solo
competition.
WHERE DID YOU GROW UP AND
GO TO HIGH SCHOOL?
I grew up in Ulsan, South Korea and graduated from Sam-il
Girls High School in Ulsan.
HOW DID YOU BECOME INTERESTED
IN THE PIANO?
I started to learn the piano since I was 6 years old. In Ko-
rea, learning the piano is a very common thing to do for girls.
Ever since then, I have gained interested in the instrument.
WHAT LED TO YOU PERFORMING
AT CARNEGIE HALL?
There is a competition called “Golden Classical Music
Awards” from New York. They select winners through the sub-
mitted video recordings, and I was awarded as a winner from
the solo piano division. Along with the first place prize, they
gave me an opportunity to perform at the Carnegie Hall.
HAVE YOU GOTTEN TO MEET
ANY FAMOUS MUSICIANS?
As the current UNT Wind Symphony pianist (Fall 2018 to

Actually I didn’t know about that competition well but one tor Eugene Corporon. That was a huge honor to listen to them
of my friends recommended me to participate. I visited their play as well as being able to perform in a concert together,

won prizes. After seeing friends who graduated from the same
university winning prizes from this competition, it motivated
me to enter this competition.
WHAT PIECE DID YOU PERFORM
AT TH AT EVENT?
I played Sonatas from L. v. Beethoven Piano Sonata No.
27 in E minor, Op. 90, F. Chopin Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat
minor, Op. 35, and S. Prokofiev Piano Sonata No. 7 in B-flat
major, Op. 83. Also, I played two Etudes from Op. 10 No. 4 in
C-sharp minor by F. Chopin, and Op. 39 No. 1 in C minor by S.
Rachmaninov.
HAVE YOU WRITTEN ANY
OF YOUR OWN MUSIC?
Not yet, but very soon I would like to compose songs of
praise, hymns or arrange hymns. There is a fabulous guitarist
in my church named Don who already composed his own
music even with his own text. He introduced me to a world of
different types of music.
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE OTHER MUSICAL
ACCOLADES YOU HAVE ACHIEVED?
Recently, I got second prize from International Liszt Piano
Competition in Los Angeles and was also chosen as winner
from Golden Classical Music Awards in New York which led
me to play in Carnegie hall. A couple of years ago during my
first year of DMA program, I was chosen as winner of UNT
concerto competition and it led me to play Mendelssohn Piano I’ve learned and experienced lots of things about music and

WHAT IS YOUR MAJOR AT UNT, AND WHAT
ARE YOUR CAREER PLANS?
I am currently pursuing a DMA (doctorate musical arts)
in piano performance under Professor Gustavo Romero.
Last month, I have completed my last DMA recital, and the
only thing pending for me to complete is my dissertation to
complete the degree. I hope to be a pianist who may be able to
positively influence other people. During my doctoral studies,
WHAT ELSE DO YOU LIKE TO DO
IN YOUR SPARE TIME?
I usually spend my time to read books about biographies,
self-improvement and Christianity. Sometimes, I uploaded my
daily life on SNS and give likes to my friends and celebrities. I
would say my daily life is fairly typical like any other students
at the university.
Thank you for reading and giving me this wonderful oppor-
tunity’ to share a little about myself. Special thanks to Pastor
Gary at FUMC The Colony!
