We've Got Your Back...

Kelly D. Smith, DC & Danielle F. Eastman, DC
Backpack Safety
Back pain is common among American adults, but a new and
disturbing trend is emerging: young children are suffering from
back, pain, partially due to overweight backpacks. According to
the American Academy of Pediatrics, a child’s backpack should
weigh no more than 10-20% of his or her body weight.
Choose a backpack with wide, padded shoulder straps and a
padded back. Organize the backpack to use all of its compartments.
Pack heavier items closest to the center of the back. Always use
both shoulder straps. Slinging a backpack over one shoulder
can strain muscles. The backpack should never hang more than
four inches below the waistline. A backpack that hangs too low
increases the weight on the shoulders, causing your child to lean
forward when walking.
Bigger is not better. The more room there is in a backpack, the
more your child will carry and the heavier the backpack will be.
If your school allows, consider a rolling backpack. This may be a
good choice for students who must tote a heavy load.
If your child experiences any pain or discomfort resulting
from backpack use, call Colony Chiropractic. We are trained to
diagnose and treat patients of all ages.
