After ERA, beauty contests
Patrick still aiming for perfection
When Kathy Patrick wakes up in the
morning, it is not to a dull day. For,
besides being a sophomore history major,
the 20-year-old Miss New Mexico is also
first runner up for Miss Texas and a
member of the UT El Paso Student
Association Council. Thus a question
arises: does Patrick fulfill these
responsibilities to the best of her ability?
“I just get bored if I’m not doing
anything,” Patrick says. “I enjoy my
classes, I love school; I really do. . .and il
I don’t achieve my potential; if I don’t
keep my grade point average high, then I
will not be able to go to law school,” she
explains.
While majoring in history at the
University, Patrick also hopes to study in
Russia at the Moscow State University.
Patrick says, “I have just been nominated
by UT El Paso for the Truman Scholarship
and if I am awarded it, I will be able to go
to the Georgetown University in
Washington D.C. to study law.”
Presently living in Anthony, Patrick
speaks of her introduction into the world
of beauty pageants. “I spent most of my
life on a farm,” the brown-haired beauty
says, “and, until I became involved in
beauty contests I was very shy.” Patrick’s
first triumph in pageants came when she
was crowned “County Fair Queen” while
in 4-HClub.
Patrick describes her views on preparing
for beauty pageants. “I think of it as a
sport,” she says. “It forces you to make
yourself the best that you can be.” How
does Patrick prepare for a pageant ?‘I lose
weight, and try to look as well as I can,”
she comments. “And then, once at the
pageant, I’m not as nervous because I have
done the best that I could do.”
What will Patrick do if for some reason
Miss Texas, cannot perform at the Miss
USA pageant? "I will still be Miss New
Mexico,” she says, “I feel that is only
right." Diana Durnford, Miss Texas second
runner-up will then represent Texas.
Even though she is involved in a sport
which persons often label as “exploitative”
and “degrading” to women, Patrick
explains her views on this controversial
subject. "I think of it as a trade-off,”
Patrick says, “everybody likes to look at
pretty girls. . .it is simply another form of
admiring beauty.” In referring to the
contest as a “trade-off,” Patrick explains in
the event of winning a pageant she is then
allowed to travel and view other lands that
she might never have seen if not for the
pageant.
Nevertheless, Patrick says, “it makes me
angry when people condemn a person for
choosing to do something that possibly
they wouldn’t have chosen.“An example
Patrick says, is if a woman wants to be a
housewife, (Patrick contends that for her
personally, that is not her goal) yet others
persecute her decision, then they are not
allowing her that freedom of choice.
Lastly, Patricks relates, “I think it is
wrong to be forced into something because
you have no option, because you simply
are a woman. “You should be able to
choose what you are going to do,” she
adds.

Patrick has chosen to represent the
student body of UT El Paso as a member
of the student council. But, does she
represent the students to the best of her
ability Paul Yetter, also a student council
member, speaks on Patrick’s effectiveness
as a member. “I think she is a good
member; she is outspoken, and says how
she thinks the council should be run,”
Yetter says. When asked if Patrick’s
attendance is harmed because of her
extracurricular activities, Yetter replies
“Kathy’s attendance is much the same as
the other members. . .we are all involved
in many other activities, but Kathy’s
attendance is nevertheless, very regular.”
Patrick’s philosophy tells of an
enlightenment which furthered her strong
desire to “be the best” that she could be.
“I once read the introduction of
President Carter’s book, ‘Why not the
best?In this introduction, Patrick relates
that a man once approached another man
for a position of employment. While
interviewing this man, the other man asked
the question of the man’s previous
employment: “Did you do the best that
you could?“Patrick says, the man had to
stop and think. Before saying yes, he had
to be honest with himself and to the man
watching him he said finally, “no.” The
other man’s reply: "Why not?”

students.
The black studies
program was originated in
1970 when a black social
fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi,
asked the former Dean of
Liberal Arts Ray Small, if
such a program would be
possible.
Another reason Glover
says the program was
instituted is “this is a
multi-cultured area ... it
was the thing to do.”
Since then, the program
has not showed much
response, but Glover says
the courses really weren’t
pushed until last semester
when flyers advertising the
new course were passed
