Testing
Continued from Page 1
The ad hoc committee’s first recommendation is to
institute a Writing Competency Test Committee to
develop the test, set grading criteria, train graders,
decide whether a student passes or fails and generally
oversee the testing program.
Jimmy Legarreta, student activities coordinator,
said "I’m very dissappointed that the ad hoc commit-
tee was made up of all faculty members and no
students. This test will touch every student, and yet
there was no student input.”
Legarreta said he thinks the test should be ad-
ministered earlier in a student’s college life, while
mere is still time to help him improve. "I feel that if
we are going to have this kind of test, it should be
taken care of before a student has completed 75
hours. I do not see why they are waiting so long.”
Esch said that there will be student input once the
exam comes before the individual faculty commit-
tees.
A trial exam was administered to volunteer seniors
last spring, a test which many of the students failed.
Olander said 689 seniors were asked to volunteer to
take the diagnostic tests, and 38 percent of these were
administered the test. Eleven percent of the 261
students taking the test failed both basic math and
basic english objective sections.
After reviewing the results of the trial test last year,
Olander said, "I am pleased that a number of our
students did very well, but we do have a problem and
we don’t want to sweep it under the rug.”
The committee’s recommendations included:
Developing the test through trial exams given dur-
ing a one-year period, starting with the summer ses-

to UT El Paso. This land is presently used as a park-
ing facility.
The bowl’s expansion is considered to be impor-
tant for El Paso’s economy, since more than $3
million were estimated to be brought in to the city’s
sion of 1981.
Leaving the form of the test (essay questions,
multiple choice and true-false questions, or a com-
bination of the two) up to the Writing Competency
Test Committee.
Allowing students to use a dictionary during the
exam, including a bilingual dictionary. Esch said that
a dictionary will not defeat the purpose of the exam
as an answer book, but that it is only realistic to
allow students to use one since it is required for the
composition process.
Having the competency test committee establish
passing grade levels and having two graders evaluate
each test.
Establishing an appeals board to consider student
appeals of test grades.
Establishing programs to help students who do not
pass the exam the first time they take it. The ad hoc
committee recommended special writing courses that
could be developed by the Center for Continuing
Education or the English Department and tutoring as
two possible options.
The committee also made several other recommen-
dations, including:
Administering the test once each semester and
summer sessions.
Requiring students to complete 75 semester hours
before applying to take the test. College deans should
notify all students with 90 credit hours of the test re-
quirement.
Requiring UT El Paso transfer students to pass the
test to graduate.
“I don’t know where we’ll be proceeding from
here. The committee has completed its task,” con-
cluded Esch.
economy as a result of the annual bowl.
The original plans were presented to the board by
El Paso architects George DuSang and Robert
Garland, from the firms of Garland and Hilles, and
Carrol, DuSang and Rand, who originally con-
ducted.the feasibility studies on the proposed expan-
sion.
