By the death of Archbishop Woods the
Catholic church has lost one of its shlninj;
lights.
Edwin Booth jhe tragedian has returned
in triumph to his native land. His success in
Europe especially in Germany has been
phcnominal.
Joseph A. Daily the sculptor is dead
but his works will long remain a monument
to his genius. The statues o( Washington and
Franklin in Philadelphia Rnwlings in Wash-
ington and Blanco in Venezuela are his chief
works.
Harvard refined to confer the degree of
IX. D. upon Ben Butler although it was
customary for that univemry to give that
honor to the Governor of the State. Har-
vard has since asked Governor Ben Butler to
attend its commencement exercises and in-
steed of sulking under the'indignity he wisely
accepts the invitation.
The Queen of Spain and h-r infant
daughters are en route for Frauzenburg where
her mother is now staying. The journey ws
unexpected and rumor states that it has been
occasioned by the discovery of an illicit in-
triguc of her husband the Kintt with one of
the court beauties. Instead of winking at her
royal husband's infidelities the Queen has
gone home to her mamma and what is still
worse says she will remain there.

THE development of the Mansfield tragedy
shows (hat the Rev. Ben Jenkins killed ue 1
Rev. J. Lane Borden over the misconstruction '
of an idle statement. Miss Mary Butler tes-1
tifies that Mr. Borden wasquilty of no impro- I
priety with her beyond placing
familiarly on her shoulder but she admits
she told enkins that Mr.' Borden had irr:
hrr "badlv " and when he asked fnr an

but yoif can think what you uish " MUs
Butler's statement was certainly vague and
suspicious and her mannner may have given
. diflerent imprcision to what ih intended to
convey. The innocence of Mr. Uoiden is
however fairly ettaMMied and It is clearly
shown that Jenkins had no real ground for
slaying him even supposing that the alleged
debauchmcnt of Miss Butler had been an ac
tual fact and furnished a just cause for such
ftarful retribution.

The Light has frequently drawn attention
to the chaotic state of the city cemetery and lj
is gratifying to find that the City Council at
last propose to do something to alter thai
which has long been a local grievance
The last resting place of the dead should be
a pleasant spot laid out to please the eye and
to show that we do indesd remember our
dead. The grates should be laid out clearly
and distlctly tiis weeds kept under control
and a lawn surface cultivated as far as posn
ble water should be accessible for the nutture
of flowers and the whole laid out in a pleas
ant manner. This would encourage the citi
rens to lake better cire of the graves of the
dead because the force of example and the
spirit of emulation are ever powerful. In
short time if the matter is properly dealt with
we can take visiting friends to our cemetery
point to it with pride and say this is our
Neiropolis the city of the dead.
There arc many things that should be done
aud which the city will no doubt do but
there is one important change should be made.
Instead of paying so much by fees the ceinc
tery officials should be paid u fixed salary and
all lees go into the city treasury. By this
means the citizens will have the absolute con
trol over their cemetery and acquire funds to
keep and maintain the cem:tery in a decent
manner.

The remains of the Government's Star
route business consists in part of an old and
new indictment against Brady. Of the former
Judge Wylic intimated according to the press
dispatch of yesterday that "he hardly thought
it need give Brady's Counsel any trouble"
which we suppose S'gnifies that there is no
probability of its ever being tried. Under the
new ind ctment Brady gave bond in the sum
of $20000 to appear. There is also the esse
of exrSenator now Congressman Kellog; in
which are various pleas in abatement the
principal probably being that the indictment
is not within the statute of limitation. Pleas
in abatement are questions of law of the na-
ture of exceptions in the civil law to be dis-
posed of precedent to trial. Judje Wylie
may properly deal with them. But the ad
ministration has in good faith and with alt
the proper means at its command sought the
conviction of these Star route conspirators
of whose guilt the public mind ii completely
satisfied yet the prosecution" has wholly
failed. Nothing can be mare unjust tan to
place the responsibility of the failu'e upon the
gjvernment. We are not aware that any ex-
cepting those who have a parlizan motive for
it do so. The fiult is with the jury. In the
District of Columbia the great body of Intelli-
gence is alien to the District and hence not
subject io jury duty. The legally qualified
juror is got from the colored people and those
whites vitiated with political and other bad
habits. It is natural to suppose the negroes
are not the best specimens. We hence think
hec should be a change of venue in future
St rollte procutions if Uey are to continue
It is EUmciently ascc.tained that there can be
no Star route criminals convideJ withIn
District. Hence any competent court outside
