A lew hours before Jerry Hof-
ter flew into the crater of
Mt St Helens, the U.S.
Geological Survey had issued an
eruption alert As his helicopter
circled the crater Hoffer
remembers thinking, "My God, I
hope this thing doesn’t blow up.”
Hoffer, a UT El Pato geology
professor, traveled to Mt St
Helens on May 17 at this year to
curve on a scientific panel that
sudied the issue of accen to
volcanoes.
The panel discussed the hue
of scientific access Io volcanoes
before and after an eruption
“There has to be some control,”
Hoffer said “The main thing n
to establish lines of communica
tion between the government
authorities and scientists "
Although the panel did not
revolve who has the ultimate say,
they did make some progress,
Hoffer said The government is
slowly lifting some of the restric-
tions to the volcano
"We told the authorities what
we named to do — fly over the
crater in a helicopter — and they
told us we did not need a
permit.” Hoffer said
“lleing that close, you pel
more respect for the size of that
crater," Hoffer said ‘One of the
mod spectacular things were the
huge arroyos in the ash that you
could not we before "
Hoffer explained that even
though it has only been five years
since the first eruption, quite a
few plants have already grown
back freer are already three to
four feet tall “But for the most
part.” Hoffer said, 'the area h
will very deviate •
“You can’t help but to learn
something every time you to It
war kind of exciting,” he said
The panel consisted of govern
ment officials, the U.S. Foreu
Service, the US Geological
Survey and several scientis,
