Opinion
SA Prez would lower
fees if she had control
By Deanna Nasser
Gacw Gamal
Every year the Student Service Fees Allocation Com
mittee appropriates the money we students pay each
st mester as student service fees
For whatever unknown reason, the list of alloc ations
has never been published in The Prospector (at least not
for the last four or five years that I know of)
The list is below F very student should look at this list,
he aware of where their money is going and take advan-
tage of all the services and programs that there are if we
students do not use these services or take advantage of
these programs, then it is our loss
Hopefully. this information will help educ ate the misin-
formed students that have been writing to the editor II
should also help the uninformed and or apathetic students
on our campus
I inv ite and encourage students to come up to the SA
office (304. Union I aw) and ack about what is going on
and how our I niversity runs
As for those students that cannot take the time to walk
up three flights of stairs when they are in the Union, they
can remain misinformed, uninformed and or apathetic
Student Assoc lation does not get all of the money we
students pay in student service fees. Nor is Student
Association, or myself for that matter, in charge of where
the money goes
it is only logical that if I. as SA president, had the power
to change or control student service fees, I would lower
them remember that I pay them too.

Senators should ask students if SA deserves to be paid
Editor:
Dear ye, hear student body'
Whatever happened to SUDS.
“Students United, Devoted.
Strong." the winning party of the
April 1986 Student Association
Senate elec tion?
It looks like President Nasser has
lost three senators from her own
ticket already before the fall semester
went into full swing, not lo mention
me. Hans Calkins, the independent,
who also left SA. and Claudio Flores
and Liz Mitchell from the UID ticket
who chose not to serve with her
Why is the UT El Paso student
government falling apart?
We want the student body to know
why we left SA as a whole Does
anybody remember the SVDS plat-
form' “Overflowing with ideas "
candidate Nasser presented the voters
with 14 points. She probably thought
of Wilson’s |4 points or make it 14
because 13 is supposed to be an
unlucky number
Ideas and promises are all SUDS
had to offer you in case you forgot,
let us quote you some of these
ideas promises The first two are
I "RESPONSIBL I management
and accountability of Al t. SA expen
ditures "
2. "Resurrect SMART Students
Moving Against Raising Tuition."
Then there was number 13 But
let's not pick on the unlucky 13
Maybe the Newsletter is still
forthcoming.
Let us focus on "idea" number I.
instead Responsible management
and accountability of all SA expen-
ditures is what I. Hans Calkins, tried
to address during the Sept 9 senate
meeting by demanding that President
Nasser, VP of Internal Affairs Hod-
son and Sen Cory Epps reimburse
SA for overpayments I never was
given a chance to explain So far
President Nasser has avoided ad-
dressing this issue
According to the SUDS platform,
the second most important "idea"
was to resurrect SMART Does
President Nasser remember this, her
own campaign promise? Is that why
dhe didn't ask for a tuition hike dur-
ing the Sept 16 senate meeting, but
advocated a rise in student service
fees instead? Please, President
Nasser, tell us what’s the difference
between the two when it comes to the
bottom line'’ Or do we have to tell
the students that they will pay yet
more at registration next time ’
Students haven't digested the last
tuition hike yet, which was
somewhere around 33 percent Soon
everybody is supposed to pay even
more to help solve the Union’s
deficit
Why don't the SA executives go
along with our suggestion lo quest- it
the student body if they want S.A to
work for free, out of dedication to
UT El Paso and to all the students?
Several other universities do not
pay their student association officers
and senators
Why raise student service fees
when all of us can tighten our belts
and bring a little sacrifice ’ Have the
SA executives ever considered
government cuts’* How about it, SA
exes and senators’
Give up your stipends (pay) and
show some of the school spirit you
talked about in April' Don’t bleed the
students anymore, their pockethooks
are already anemic.
The students elected you to work
for them, not to ask them for more
sacrifices
