Opinion
Freedom
Don‘t allow minority
to dictate morality
By Aldo J. Velasquez
Gue Eenorsat
I would like to protest against the *>X in which the
University Bookstore moved erotic magazines under the
counter The way in which University President Haskell
Monroe, Dean of Student Affairs Jose Avila and Univer-
sity Bookstore Director Ray Cadena placed the complaints
of a few malcontents above the freedom of choice of all
UT El Paso students was irresponsible, hypocritical and
cowardly
People who have reached the level of a university educa-
tion should be mature enough to know that different peo
ple have different tastes A free society can only exist it
we respect and tolerate each other’s opinions
Those in charge of this University should decide whether
their duty is to uphold academic freedom and the rights
if students or *i pander to loudmouths who would be more
a home in the Soviet Union or the Ayatollah’s Iran

Censorship should also include
medical, art & psychology texts

This is a university, a place for the free expression of
thoughts and ideas If this is an, why should a minority
« able to control our freedom?
I am talking about the decision to move the magazines
like Playboy and Penthouse behind the counter One per
ton, lose Avila, seems to have been responsible for the
“If such censorship is going to
be the norm on campus, why not
nave a special counter for the
dirty books. We could include
all the anatomy books; they

nasty bodily functions."
hange This happening approximately three weeks after
i week devoted to lighting censorship
Was any census of students taken for their opinions?
Exactly how many complaints did President Monroe
receive? Why was no announcement made until after the
fact?
Bookstore Director Cadena said the whole matter has
seen left to his discretion until now I applaud his inac-
tion, whether or not it was through benign neglect
If such censorship is going to be the norm on campus,
why not have a special counter for the dirty books We
could include the anatomy books, they show naked bodies
and discuss nasty bodily functions
We could also put the sociology and psy, hology books
there as they both discuss sex and deviant sexual behavior
And we must definitely put the an and photography books
and magazines there since they, too, show the naked body.
This is another small step towaid the type of country
Attorney General Edwin Meese wants Don’t worry about
the criminals: pornographers are killing us and the
American Way
I agree that child pornography and pornography that
degrades men and women should be banned, but 1, for
one, do not wish to become a "Meese-kateer "
Put the magazines back on the rack and let those who
don't like them not read them

Letters from our readers
University police officers should protect us, not harass us
Editor:
On Oct 21, 1986, after a hard
day's work, and as I was getting in
my car, I found a traffic violation
citation on my windshield To my
surprise and dismay, the ticket stated
‘Undesignated parking space"
(could have been impounded)
For over three years I have been
parking in the same parking space at
a parking lot designated for ' Facul-
ty and Staff " The sidewalk is on one
side, a white stripe is on the other
side There is no indication that this
is not a parking space—no yellow or
red paint.
The following morning I went to
the police station for an explanation
of the ticket and after explaining my
problem to the person at the "traf-
fic" counter, he told me I would have
to talk to the officer who issued the
ticket and gave me a time when he
would be there
After two unsuccessful attempts
to see the officer, I spoke to Lt. Car-
pio and Mr Lamontagne, supervisor
of parking and traffic
When I explained the situation to
them they understood the problem
and told me the ticket would be
voided.
The purpose of my writing to The
Prospector is to express my
dissatisfaction at having received a
ticket which I think was improperly
issued and which caused me a lot of
lost time and frustration in trying to
get it resolved, and also to thank Lt.
Carpio and Mr. Lamontagne for their
cooperation.
I also want hi express my gratitude
to Dr. Tony Tarquin, civil engineer-
ing professor, for having helped me
by serving as my witness.
