Jaycees hold orienta-
Ption for volunteers
The Allen Jaycees hosted a meet-
ing Tuesday night for the volunteers
who will help during the upcoming
Allen Country Fair. Fifteen people
attended the meeting at the Allen
Public Library.
Event chairman Dana McGowan
opened the meeting with a greeting
and an explanation of the purpose of
I the fair. She said the fair could not be
carried out without help from the
volunteers and invited them to bring
their friends and family to help out.
McGowan then introduced
Jeaneane Lilly, who explained the
duties the volunteers would carry
out. Lilly said volunteers would be
used in every area, from helping
park cars to coordinating shows on
the two entertainment stages.
. After the meeting, the volunteers
• were issued Country Fair T-shirts
and assigned specific duties.
The Country Fair will take place
from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday,
Sept. 7, in downtown Allen. For in-
formation, contact McGowan at 727-

CCCC enrollment
nears 10,000 mark
Enrollment at Collin County Com-
munity College is up nearly 7 per-
cent from last fall, according to the
school’s dean of enrollment manage-
ment.
Toni Allen said 9,774 students had
registered for fall classes at the col-
lege as of Thursday morning. Enroll-
ment at the end of August 1990
stood at 9,155.
Allen said a major factor in the
b enrollment boost was the growing
popularity of the college’s Tele-
phone Express registration system,
which was implemented last spring.
Fifty-nine percent, or 5,758 of the
students enrolled, registered by
phone — the highest number to util-
ize the system thus far, she said.
Last spring, 3,547 students reg-
istered through the system.
“We hope to continue the number
a that use the telephone option,” Allen
• said. “I think we can provide better
service to students with the phone
system. They get in earlier and have
a better chance to get the classes
they want.”
She added that it’s more conve-
nient because students may call from
9 a.m. to 9 p.m. seven days a week
from home or work and avoid the
lines at regular registration.
Official enrollment figures will not
a be taken until the 12 th day of classes
• Sept. 9. Allen expects only a slight
decrease in the number of students.
Enrollment has risen steadily
since the college opened in 1985;
1,326 students were enrolled then.
Between fall 1989 and fall 1990, the
number of students registering in-
creased more than 4 percent.
“The thing we’re pleased about is
that we have been able to maintain
the same number of sections and
a only increase those with high de-
mand (such as English and speech),”
Allen said.
