Founder’s Day
WASHINGTON—(A N P)—Three
local chapters of Zeta Phi Beta so-
rority celebrated Founder’s day Sat-
urday evening on the campus of
Howard university, birthplace of
the sonority. Beta Zeta chapter was
hostess to the two undergraduate
chapters.
Joint Meet
The celebration began with the
three chapters holding a joint meet-
ing in the coffee ahoppe of Frazier
hall, after which a closed banquet
was held in the cafeteria, with
members of Phi Beta Sigma fra-
ternity as guests. Eighteen inch blue
candles embedded in blue flowers
and encircled by handmade sou-
venir programs decorated the many
tabled.
The guests of honor were Mrs.
Arizona Cleaver Stemons of Phila-
delphia, founder of the sorority,
and Dr. A. Langston Taylor of
Washington, who not only founded
Phi Bets Sigma, but inspired the
organization of its sister sorority,
Zeta Phi Beta. The founder was
presented with a blue leather guest
book decorated with five stars, rep-
resenting the five charter members
and autographed by each person
present.
Mrs. Anita Anderson read a
poem composed by her and
dedicated to the founders on
this 23rd anniversary of the

To Deduct Point For
All Canned Goods In
Excess Of 5 Cans Each
Deduction of points from War Ra-
tion book Two for all rationed
canned goods in excess of five
cans possessed for each person in the
family will be made at the time
the new ration book is issued in
the near future, the Office of Price
Administration announced today.
Deduction of an eight point
stamp for each can held in the
family unit in excess of five
cans per person will be made
equally from all ration books in
the family group. Thus each
book will retain at least one
half of its original points for
each ration period, enabling the
holder to provide variety to
meet dietary requirements.
In declaring excess stocks of can-
ned goods at the time or distribu-
tion of the new ration book, the
person registering for the family
unit must state the excess number
of cans of rationed foods of eight-
ounce size and larger owned in
the family.

FREDERICK RHODES, M.D.
THE CASE AGAINSE TOBACCO
V. SUMMARY OF FACTS
AND CONCLUSIONS t
In this series of articles on the
damning effects of the use of tobac-
co I have sought to make certain
facts impressive by quoting from
articles written by authorities on
the subject. How much good my
efforts will do—how many people
will be persuaded to discontinue
and how many not begin or yet
how many will reduce the amount
of tobacco they use—I do not know.
But there is abundant evidence that
tobacco is a great enemy of the
human race. It can do no good, and
yet great expanses of fertile soil in
such states as the Virginias, the
Carolinas, Tennessee, Kentucky,
and others are given to the culti-
vation of this weed. How much
better it would be if all these lands
were used for producing food and
clothing material, which are neces-
sary for the preservation of life and
health. It was pointed out in pre-
vious articles that smoking over a
period of years sometimes leads to
cancer of the lips, mouth, and
lungs. Cancer of the lips and mouth
are stimulated more by pipes and
cigars than by ciagrettes, while
cigarettes cause cancer of lungs
more often than pipes and cigars.
It was also shown that stomach
ulcers are aggravated by smoking.
The use of tobacco may contribute
to diseases of the blood vessels
which cause severe pain, crippling,
and finally amputation of a foot or
leg..
Concerning smoking in the Unit-
ed States Army, Major C. W.
Crampton of medical corps says,
“It makes a vast difference to you
and me whether the men defend-
ing our country and us are victims
of slow poisoning by nicotine or
other drugs, or are on their toes,
second to none as physical and
mental specimens of the human
race. If the nicotine of cigarette
smoke is harmful, and it is—if sol-
diers smoke more than civilians,
and they do—the physician’s duty
in the situation is clear." In other
words, smoking in the armed forces
should be discouraged in the in-
terest of quicker victory.
Dr. Edwin J. Grace made a study
of a long series of cases and along
with other facts made the conclus-
ion that smoking is bad for preg-
nant women and often prevents
pregnancy in others. Says Dr.
Grace, “Shoeneck, in a survey of
cigarette per day results in appar-
states that the only conclusion that
can be drawn from a series of ex-
periments on pregnant rabbits is
that exposure to the smoke of one
cigaret per day results in appar-
ently deleterious effects upon the
offspring. He feels that until it is
proved that excessive cigarette
smoking is not harmful in preg-
nancy. it should be cautioned
against.
Of a different opinion is Reichel,
who has investigated the influence
of smoking on young women and
children. He points out that chronic
nicotine poisoning results in steril-
ity which disappears after cessa-
tion of smoking. It is of particular
importance to note that In pregnant
women the nicotine is immediately
transmitted to the child, and an ac-
celerated heart-beat of the fetus
has been recorded. Nicotine also is
found in the mother’s milk, and its
secretion is diminished."
This series of articles was intend-
ed to show that the use of tobacco
is a curse to health and physical
stamina. Tobaceo has not one merit.
Civilization would be better off
without it.

HELLO THERE, PALS:
Just yesterday, it seems, we were greeting a brand new
year and already one whole month of that year is gone. I
hope you all have something to show for it; some worthwhile
deed you have accomplished.
I am sure this new year has brought new hope to our
men in the armed forces. A new hope springing from our
gallant allies, who are so bravely and so successfully defeat-
ing the enemy on many fronts. But, as we are constantly re--
minded, the victory is far, far from being won and the na-
tion has been called-on to give as much as is possible of its
time, its money, and its efforts to push the army far right
further toward victory.
So let us all resolve to buy more war stamps, get as
much war training as we can, and save on all fronts. The
boys on the battlefield are depending on us for the means of
winning the war. They are making the supreme sacrifice;
all we are asked to do is to help.
And now, soldiers: Probably many of you are being mov.
ed very often from camp to camp and it takes some time to
get re-settled. But I don’t want you to forget to drop a line
to the Army Mail Bag. All of you would like to hear from
pals so why don’t you write? This column is especially for
you, to keep you cheered up. Bob will be glad to receive your
letters. Just write to the Army Mail Bag, 2418 Leeland Ave-
nue, Houston, Texas.
Miss Alma Everet of Omaha, please pick out a soldier
whom you would like to hear from, and send his number, to-
gether with a blank stamped envelope to me, and I will send
your letter on. Please pals, don’t forget to give the numbers
of your soldiers, and please, please don’t forget the stamp-
ed, blank envelope. Don’t write anything on it.
Be seeing you next week. BOB.

Girls today can be grateful that
some subjects are discussed more

That's one reason why thousands
of women have come to know about
CARDUI’s 2-way help. Some take
it, as directed, three days before
“their time” to help relieve periodic
pain due only to functional causes.
Others take it as a tonic to stimu-

by increasing the flow of gastric
