All day yostorJaf tbcro was a at ran no activ-
ity In this city that plainly told that something
of a fcitlvo character was taking place. Men
scorned excited and remarkably busy. jot
withal Joyful; tho ladles smiled sweeter than
ever and as for the small boy or git) ho or
she as tho caso might be appeared t loin
the soventh heaven of juvenile delight Tim
citizens wero erecting bunttnjrnml evctKi cents

wards evening was ono of beauty showing that
our citizens wero boiled when It was stated
that they took no Interest In an affair of
pleasure and Importance to tho fair City of
the Alamo. Many strange faces wero noticed
on the streets As tho day drew to u close old
men young men and boys merrily chat ling
and laughing were seen pasting onwnrd In ono
direction all making for Central pardon.
What caused this plcisuruhlo commotion?
Why It was this tho people's feast or tho
Volksfest as It Is usaully termed was about to
commence and tbo old and young wero going
to tho garden to take their share In the grand
night procession. Tho city editor of tho
LioitT mounte'd uioa his much nbuned but
substantial Pegasus arrived at tho garden
At tho front he found an excellent imitation of
tho mcdlicval city gates huviog three git-
ways which was painted to reprcsont the
rough hewn rock of which such gates
wero usually built Tho centre -turret was
castellated and had a gratlog door for arches.
Above tho door i a green wreath enclosing
bluo medallons on which Is tbo American eagle
In gold enwrcatbed. Ho low it h tho humorous
picture of a man enjoying a glass of beer
which some said represented tho architect
or builder but which l rather out of
keeping with tho rest of ihu design. Over tho
ceutro and iIJo arches green wreathi are seeu
which enclosed a bluo inedallon having the
Texas lone star In silver mounted thereon.
AmerlcRii Texas and German Hags are effec-
tively placed. Tho abutments are decorated
with green wreathes und tho base are used as
ticket oflices. From tho castellated turret tho
stars nud stripes llnat proudly In tho breeze
and other national Hugs are well placed. The
arch was deslgued and executed by Mr. A. F.
llcckraann architect. On either sldo are Ger-
man Hags having enwrcathed modal. Ono
bears tho quotation from Shakespeare with
"Mirth and laughter let wrinkles come and lot
my liver rut he r keep hot with wine than my
heart cool with mortifying gloom' On tho
other side Is u Gorman motto appropriate to tho
occasion. Proceeding down tho walk ho found
two moro llsg staffs and more enwreathed
mottoes. Ono was characteristic German; tho
other In English read "Whilst thou has tho
wherewith to rpend every man will be thy
friend." A f tcr passing tho panorama decorated
with tlagstwo moro Hag staffs appeared bearing
a German andtfnirllimcnwrouthod motto. Tho
Kngllsli irotto read "There Is no sterner
moralist than pleasure." Passing up tho broad
walk Pavo Koths Ice-cream stand Is presented
clean and decorated with Hag bunting whllo
In tho valley Immediately before It Is tho chill
eon came staud of Madame Candelarla an
tigod Mexican cook of great abblty who sold
chill and other Mexican dishes to our fathers.
Tho dan to platform uoxt comes In view and is
very prettily draped with German trl-color
bunting cvorgrcens and at each point national
(lags are displayed. At one end of tho hull Is a
wreath enclosing tho American eagle at tho
other Is tho Lyre symbollical of music. Tho
nppearanco by tho electric light is very pretty.
A little further on Is the stage whero tableaux
and tho operetta will "be produced. It is a con-
spicuous building designed by Mr Mueller tho
architect. Tho front In whtto is pi easuntly re-
lieved by pillars either side and abovo tho
stage Is a scroll bearing the tyro and national
Hags. In front of tho stago arc seats for tho
uudlouco. Around tho al fresco auditor aro
four flag staffs and Hags Hying to which aro
affixed mdre green wreaths enclosing Ger-
man and English mottoes. One of the Kugllsh
in ot tecs reads "Let not thlno eyo ono teardrop
wcop unless that tear of rapturo tells the
other. Tbo kiss you take Is paid for by tho Joy
you give tho Joy Is mutual and I'm still In
debt." How many ladles ore prepared to en-
dorso the truth of the latter quotation? Hec-
tor's candy stand Mahncko's restaurant Hrez-
akor's sausage stand and Simon rest's beer
stands follow. In front of tho latter U tbo
orator'8itandwbIch Is very prettily decorated.
From a red vallanco aro bluo
curtains and abovo them enwreathed Is
tho American eaglo. Ono trl-color drapery
twoHttgs of the Lono Star State bound under
tho shield of stars and stripes rod balustrade
white and red sub valtcnoo and white vase on
which is acinquofollformedof wreaths the
outside wrcatus enclosing tho lono star and
tho centre surrounding tbo lyro. Tho effect Is
rather hoavy but it Is pleasing. On each sldo
tly tbo German standard. Mr. Itledeker's oof-
fee stand la next and on tho other side is scon
the fountain which Is neatly painted. On two
of tho four sides aro tho lono star enwreathed
supported by two Hags. On tbo other sides
tbo same design Is followed out except that
an cseutoheon containing the stars aud stripes
is substituted for tbo louo star emblem. After
passing KUefortu'a beer stand andtbe shooting
gallery tbo modhuval gate is reached and tho
pleasant panorama la ended.
Itetracfng his steps the Liatvr man proceod-
ed to tho dancing ball whero tia found tbo
boys and men attiring tbeinsolves In all kinds
of fanor costumes under the direction of Mr.
Seebo Mr Mueller and Mr. Walter Freis and
in this tbo bovshad a gtcatdoal of fun for
which tboy paid well as some of the ornitho-
logical plseatorlat and animal oostumca wero
heavy and remarkably hard to wear by roason
of their weight und tbo exclusion of air. Vel
the boys dltf their taek well and with good
humor. The soono when tho boys were dress-
ed was amusing. The ghosts talked with tbo
lion tbo tiger tratornlzed with the lamb tbo
llano qu&drlllod with animals of all kinds the
dudos und tho monkoys by reason of tbelr at-
nuity happily conversed together ud If tho
dudes envied the superiority of the monkeys'
brain they may reasonably bo excused 'ihe

Our City Fathers on the Water (Juesl
Tli. Mosquito l.'pldemlc-llleed.
Ins a Stone Wall.
lMltor San Antonio Mght 1
Since " San Tedro" opened his battery on
the honorable member for the Third ward
there seems to be a number of headaches and
fevers among that body. But do wonder
when they find nearly 4000 families not 4000
people Mr. Lockwood but 4000 families
who get their water from our rivers wells and
ditches are united and will defend to the bit
ter end any and every encroachment on the!
rights and privileges. And what can be more
sacred than to fight for our bread and water ?
We cannot have bread without water and we
must have that pure and unpolluted. The
nonorablo member for the Third ward th
dupe of the powers that be thought that h
would catch the people asleep. Had Tn
Light not taken up the subject a few more
days and the Board would jiave pissed the
ordinance to pollute our ditches and make
them sewers because there was no opposi
tion. But no sooner had Tut Licht shone
on the question more than two-thirds ot the
people of San Antonio became alive to the
Importance c-f prompt and decisive action
Take a back seat Mr. Lockwood; double-
dealing won't do in this enlightened age of
ours. Since that powerful discharge of "San
Pedro's" battery our city father have been
turned topsy-turvy and have been running
"amuck" ur.til they struck their heads against
Captain Merrill s stone dam causing a contu
sion that required the service of the best
physician Or. Story who called and pro
nounced the patient labeling under a severe
case of mosquito fever. But how Is this ?
The people of the Third word declare this
exotic plant but no sooner hid this taken root
In the Second ward thin It blew like wildfire
across the San Antonio river and strange to
uy the honorables were the only ones so fit
that came under the influence of this terrible
mstidy. After a contultttlon of Ihe eiperts
It wis their unsnlmous opinion that the "dam
must be bled." After various conjectures on
the subject It was concluded to allow Mr.
lockwood the First to try his dynamite ex
pcriment on II In hopes that It might con
vince Ihe people of his wilt and power aqi!
perhaps waih out Ihe filth from around the
re nch building and other placet before the
people begin to investigate and it would alio
prevent Captain Mcrrltt from slatting an oppo-
sition water works company and have Its effect
In driving capitalists and manufactories from
our border. It is true the honorable com
mittee have taken In the dam but the verdict
Is postponed. The washerwomen think lha
Lockwood the First will be allowed to try his
hand with dynamite on the mosquitoes first.
Mr. hditor the mosquitoes are so bad your
repartbr will be obliged to adjourn. More

COLORED FIENDS.
lien llrav.ly Defends Ills Countrywoman
front Turttier 111 Treatment
A sad case has just come to the knowledge
f the police. It appears a family of Kus-
slsn Jews consisting of a mother and three
little children named Alta Bcrlotte aad liv
ing in the end house on Solcdad street are In
state of absolute want and would have
starved to death hid It not been for the chiri-
table behavior of one of their own country-
men 1". Cohen a cirpenter. This is not the
worst. The poor woman lives among a set
f brutal colored people who tike advantage
f her isolated position to torment her In
every way possible her wlndo s are smished
she herself it often thrown down by these
scoundrels and beaten her children are taken
away and locked up for hours while the poor
mother Is plteously crying and asking for her
little ones. A short time since her little girl
wat teired by these fiends and forced to take
medicine and only for a doctor't timely aid
the child would hive died. Lately it bat not
been to bad at Cohen discovering the state
of things rented a room at the woman'
house and during his presence she was safe.
This morning a colored man came into her
yard with the evident intention of assaulting
her. Cohen happening to be In Ihe house
rushed out with his shotgun brought It down
and in another moment the colored mtn
would have fled into Ihe "dim obscure" hid
not the woman whom he and his companions
have treated like a dog thrown herself on
Cohen and prevented Ihe shooting. Cohen
wit in the police office thit morniog tilling
thete facts and he hat sworn to shoot Ihe
next man who torments his wretched country-
woman. A TERRIBLE STRIFE.
Jealousy nt a Dance Lends to a Terrible
Struggle wltli Knives anil l'lstols.
Jealousy 1 Jealousy I Jealousy! Green-eyed
jealousy and woman at the bottom of It.
Womin is at the bottom of everything and
she most cctlalaly was at the bottom of the
blood-thirsty row at Krisch's.hall last night.
In the intoxicating whirl of the mazy dance
Moss I'crry with frowqint; eye beheld the
lady of his heart floating sround In the arms
of another suitor Creen Wall by name. Oh
how the blood of Moss Perry warmed and
warmed and his heart beat quick and quick
er and he was losing all control of his pas-
sions and "jealousy despotic ruled alone."
The touple ncared the now infuriated Perry
and at they tilled try a pistol shot rang
through Ihe hall and the bullet buried itself
In the wall. It wat all in a moment. It was
done in a flash. Wall waved a knife with a
'bloody tongued paint" and a gash In
Perry's shoulder told its tale. The contest
ants were about to fallen each other again
when Officer Brown seized Perry and pulled
him out of the room. Five or six men joined
in the struggle. Knives pistols and sticks
flourished in the air. Brown blew one
shrill note on hit whistle. In five minutes
the gallop of horses were heard Ferris
Dolan Opperman and Doebbler rushed In
and the fight wis over. Severtl arrests were
mide and on Siturdiy the case will come
before the Recorder only to be transferred
to the grand jury.

share to the Light corps to-day. His adver-
tising turnout was a handsome one.
ltecorder'a Court.
In the Recorder's coutt this morning the
only cases tried were the jail cases six in
number all of whom were drunk and down.
The Cnes amounted to $30. All bond cases
will be tried on Saturday at the usual time.
Take Ale Home.
"Come fill up your glasses" tacp; a gen-
tleman outside of Henry Feille's saloon tbe
gentleman being three sheets in the wind at
the time. His antics were laughable; one
was to put five cents Into the letter box and
saying at the same time "take me home
there't my fire." Wo mention no names.
A Had Accident
Sammy Dwyer the little 14 year old ton of
Major J. E. Dwyer broke hit leg about
11:30 o'clock this morning. t The little fellow
was riding on horseback around with the pro-
cesslotand In some manner fell off and broke
his leg. He was promptly removed to Kal-
tyer's drug store where he wat taken proper
care of.
