THE BRADY STANDARD BRADY TEXAS TUESDAY APRIL 2, 1929
: SIDELIGHTS:
+ ON THE TRACK MEET ♦
I: VAVE VA
Tu: :
That the recent McCulloch Coun-
ty Interscholastic meet was the
most successful ever staged, was
expressed by the majority of those
who attended Saturday. Although
the meet was a little late about
netting started, the schedule was
A cried out to the dot, meaning that
the events were staged in rapid suc-
cession after once starting. Credit
for this most successful of all for-
mer meets must go to R. L. “Red”
Williams, director of athletics, J. 0.
Trussell, director general of the In-
terscholastic League of McCulloch
county and J. B. Vincent, chair-
man of the School Activities com-
mittee of the Brady Chamber of
Commerce.
In two of the officials at the
meet, spectators had the opportun-
ity of seeing two of the best ath-
letes in the Southwest. The two
chaps were Garland “Goober”
Keyes, former Cisco High School
football and track star, and now
starring with Abilene Christian
College, and the other was a rising
star from Rising Star, Ernest
Thompson, who set a state record
in the 220-yard dash at the track
meet at the Southwestern Exposi-
tion and Fat Stock Show in Fort
Worth last month.
Dalton Hill, official starter for
the meet, is assistant coach at Abi-
lene Christian College, and is a for-
mer athletic star at that institu-
tion, doing his starring in the days
when our “Red” Williams was a
big athletic hero there. He’s a
great tennis player, and a greater
coach from the record he has made
this season. Thus far he has play-
ed several matches with Texas
conference and T. I. A. A. teams,
and has his first one to lose.
Leslie Terry, the blonde-haired
youth who played a good brand of
basketball here last winter, had
won the title of “fastest human’
when he came in first in the dashes,
and the title was more justifiable
at the close of the meet when he
dashed across the tape in the final
heat of the relay after starting
with a 25-yard handicap. This
race was the most thrilling of the
meet.
Strickland proved himself to be
a versatile athlete on the field
Saturday. He placed first and
fourth in the 220-yard low and
120-yard high hurdles, and broad
jumped 19 feet and 7 inches, a
quarter of a foot further than W al-
of Rochelle, placed, fourth in
■ e high jump, and had second
greatest distance in the javelin
throw.
Although no state records were
broken at the meet Saturday, nev-
ertheless a comparison with the
Eastland County Interscholastic
meet last Saturday at Cisco shows
that Necessary of Lohn, who took
first honors in discus, shot put and
javelin outdistanced the winners in
that meet. He put the shot 34
feet farther than an Eastland coun-
ty athlete, threw the discus 10 feet
9 inches farther, and tossed the
javelin for a 16%-foot greater dis-
tance. The state records for shot
put, discus and javelin are 5
2% in.; 139 ft., 3 in., and 178 ft.. ‘
in., respectively. ____________
