Las Vpoas October 17. There Is a bad
state of affairs alone 'he advanced poilion of
the Meilcan railroad. Sit men have been
murdered In (he past two weeks rattles re-
turning ssy life is at a crest discount. Hail-
road men to-day found the skeletona of three
Texas cattle thieves murdered near Gloryetta
four years ago. Their exact fate was unknown
until the discovery was made.
Nrw York October 17. Governor Cleve
land has telegraphed the counsel for Edward
llovey aentcnceil to be hanged on Friday
next for the murder ol his sister-in-law Mrs
Fanny Vcroecella that he would not interfere
with Ilorey's execution and this was his final
determination llovey received the news
quietly but bitterly upralded the Governor for
not allowing him a few days additional life.
GALVISTON October 17. The Hate Hall
associalion lias been negotiating for the
possession of a bbek of ground. When this
is accomplished the necessary improvements
will be immediately commenced. An effort Is
also being made to induce the Si. Louis dub
which missed the championship by only one
game to spend the winter in Galveston. The
prospect is there will be a series of strong
games arranged with the New Orleans winter
nine which Is made up from members of three
professional clubs.
New York October 16. Tom Barnes
and Tom King English pugilists engaged in
prize fight at 2 o clock lists morniag for a
purse of $100 in a notorious sporting house
in Brooklyn. Barnes was tecoaded by Jimmy
Murray and Jee E. Fowler while John Dris-
coll and John Woods performed like services
for King. The fight was governed by the
ruics 01 ine l-onoon prize ring and a 30 sec-
ond's rest was allowed between each round.
Light rounds were fought In 18 minutes and
King acknowledged himself beaten.
Nkw York October 16. The annual
meeting of the tiuslees of the John T. Slater
fund was held to-day with ex-President Hayes
in the chair. The Rev. I). A. G. Haywood
general agent of the fund submitted his re-
port which shows that more than
half of the children of the Southern
States who are of proper age to at-
tend school are not enrolled and that a great
majority of the colored teachera are ignorant
anu unsaiuui. 11 snso suggests practical plans
for the education of the colored people in Ihe
South.
Chicago October 17. The eleventh an
nual congress of the association for the ad-
vancement of woman begun here this after-
noon. A large number of distinguished
women from all par's of the countiy were In
attendance. Julia Ward Howe the aged
President made the opening address and re-
ferred with some feeling to the first session of
the association held In this city in 1872 and
the fact that many of those concerned in the
Initial organization had passed away she
declared that a great deal had been accom-
plished for and by the woman of the country
during this period but declared that the
greatest reforms are to come. After the
present leaders had carved out the sphere of
action for the female sex as the world was
slow in according woman her rights.
Louisville Ky. October 17. The Rev.
Allen Allensworth a colored Baptist minister
of Bowling Green has Issued an address to all
colored ministers of the gospel ot all denomi-
nations In the United Stales and territories oi
America In which he suggests a national con-
vention to give moral force to the work begun
by the late convention of colored men in this
city and to present to Ihe world documentary
evidence and statistical data of the moral re-
ligious and financial progress of Ihe colored
race since emancipation. Also to advise col-
ored people what they should do to repair the
moral disaster which came through the ex-
perience of slavery and the need of family
life paternal authority and marriage integrity
all broken down by that institution; to Im-
firove their social standing and to secure
egal equality with all men. All ministers
favoring the call are requested to address Al-
lensworth at Bowling Green. The convention
it to be held at Louisville or Indianapolis.
Cincinnati October 17. The Sixteenth
Annual Reunion of the Army of Tennessee
began to-day with a large attendance of mem-
bers. General Grant will arrive by to-mor
row. The society formed at the Kennard
house at 10:30 this morning and marched in
procession about 2000 in number with bands
of music Major Howe and Captain Barber
carrying the society colors and Generals
Sherman and Leggctt arm In arm at Ihe head
of the column to Ontario street tabernacle
where the business meeting was held. Gen-
eral Sherman President of the society on
calling It to order tendered his congratula-
tions on the large attendance the apparent
good health ot the members and the aus-
picious circumstances surrounding the begin-
ning of the reunion. Committees were ap-
pointed to select officers orators and the
' place of the next meeting. The annual re-
ports were submitted and routine business
transacted. Letters of regret were read from
Generals Hancock Crook Prior Harrison
and others. Among those present are Gener-
als Sherman Logan Leggett Hickenlooper
Fellows Fletcher Falrchild Noyes Buck.
