THE INCENSEJDF THANKS.
Sermons nt fit. Mary's St. Mark's and the
Trinity 31. E. Church.
The observance of yesterday was almost
confined exclusively to the churches. Only
a few of the business houses were closed the
entire day while the city offices remained
open during the forenoon only It was at the
churches that this anniversary called the peo-
ple together to ofTer up their thanks In prayer
and praise.
At. St. Maty' church Rev. Father Johnston
olfered up a solemn high mast at the close of
which the Te Deupi was chanted. The rnuilc
was as usual of a high order. Tbe celebrant
of the mass preached a short sermon remind-
ing the hearers of the duty not only to be
grateful to the Giver of all good gifts on one
day set apart but in all seasons and under
every circumstance.
A reunion of all the Episcopal churches in
a Thanksgiving service after prescribed forms
was held at St. Mark's cathedral; Revs.
Richardson and Ticknor occupied their
places in the sanctuary and conducted
the services. A full choir of select voices
added a pleasing charm to the exercise! and
was deeply appreciated by those who came to
render their tribute of gratitude. Dr. Rich-
ardson delivered a feeling diicoursc of which
we have but space to cull a fen leading
points. He said that It was noteworthy that
In the three great Jewish feasts in which the
males were commanded to appear before Ihe
Lord were alwayt connected with the harvett.
He inttanced the Passover Instituted to com-
memorate the deliverance of Israel was
observed in the month of Abib which means
a grem car of corn thus signifying that tbe
young tender grain needed the blesslngt of
Jehovah. So too with Pentecost sugges ive
of the fruit of good wotks to come from the
observance of the law. In the tervice
they were now celebrating they were
exhibiting a recognition of God's prov-
idence an acknowledgment that there
Is a God who rules all things and
distributes His bounties so universally. The
idea of a Thanksgiving is a part of natural re-
ligion. Even Thcocrates speaks of a feast to
Ceres and the offering of fruits on the altar.
So too in other parts of Greece Rome and
Asiyrla days of feaits were set apart on which
to render thanks. During the revolutionary
war Congress annually appoint id a day of
thanksgiving and at the close of the war re-
manded lis celebration to the several States.
The reverend gentleman continued to give the
history of the day in a well prepared discourse
replete with facts and incidents and closed by
urging his listeners to make the entire year a
complete cycle of thanksgivings by carrying
out the spirit which the day inspired. He
appealed to them that as the poor was always
with them they should be more liberal in their
gilts especially at communion times thut
consecrating all that they have to the service
of the Lord
Rev. W. J. Young of the Southern Metho-
dist church preached to a large congregation
a most effective and timely discourse of which
Ihe following synopsis will give some of the
leading thoughts:
I Peter lit verse. 8th chapter: "Whom
having not seen ye love; in whom though
now ye see him not yet believing ye rejoice
with joy unspeakable and full of glory."
Even the casual reader of tbe scriptures
must have noticed Ihe effort on the part ol
God to make us happy. In the beginning he
said all was very good : and wnataver ol sor-
row and -trouble are in the world man has
caused It. Hence the frequent commands to
be joyful and thankful. We should be grate-
ful as a matter of duty for who can forgive
Ingratitude ? But hence we should be grate-
ful as a matter of discipline. Heaven is a
place of happiness and we muit get ready
here to be happy hercafier. But you will say
it is easy enough for those in wealth and hap-
piness to be grateful but how can those
who have had grief and pain rejoice and be
f ralclul! But I want a song of joy on every
ip to-day. Them to whom Peter wrote had
passed through trouble but we read that they
rej deed with jny unspeakable and full ol
glory. Let us try to solve the mystery.
They lived in the future. This is part of
faith. Man lives for the future. He moves
f irward; his eye looks keenly Into the beyond.
His soul is free yet and in the desire we have
the fact of immortality and eternal life. The
child looks forward to play of to morrow. In
labors of life we think of fortune. By it
the scholar looks forward to the day
when he shall be a great and noble man.
Merchant labors not for sake of laboring but
for the sake of the fortune he expects
to possess. Bad for an individual or nation
to have no future. Better aim higher yea
higher than we can ever reach. I know we
call them dreamers. But the scientist Is a
dreamer. The woild's philanthropls's have
been dreamers. So have all relormers and
suffered but lo iked forwsrd to the future
victories. Luther's Irleoos tried to prevent
his going to and ridiculed Lut he went.
He saw there days of liberty and freedom
from superstition. The Bible speaks of these
dreamers. Abel Moses Elijib Christ and
a host of others. This was the trouble wiih
the afflicted. They think only of the present
they forget the future But I beg you to think
of the light to-morrow. This is the
meaning of Ch'lst's command "Take
no thought for your life" and
yet sees the kingdom of God and his right-
eousness and this helps us to work. It turns
duty to a song.
They lived in a world of imagination.
They imagined Christ and the future would be
present. This Is Ihe grealest fealty of the
soul. It is used by the artist and poet but
also by ihe mathematician and builders. Its
creations are eternal. The form the word'
may die but the thought will live forever.
The depraved use of it will down you. You
set for yourself a fair picture of life it hss
been scattered; but the mistaken thought will
live forever. The right uie of it will
save you. You kept before you Christ
and cross and lead bis love and yon were
saved. Weary one troubled one forget the
present and form an image of that future
world of joy and bliss and be happy
3. They had learned the lesson of Implicit
trust What God does is always best. Look
at this picture: A nursery; the toys are scat-
tered on the floor among them a broken doll;
a child in mother's lap his head on her
boiom a tear in his eye for his broken toy.
But he has fallen asleep. May we not when
hopes and joys sre broken rest on His bosom.
Who cares (or ust How shall we thank God
then today! Let us be joyful. We csn
thank him best by showlrg we appreciate His
gifts and enjoy them. Let us burn up on His
altar our sorrows snd griefs and let us shott
for Jy "The Lord God omnipotent releneth;
let the earth rejoice."

The flrrat Comedy ltoorul
Tbe present is a Day of Comedy I Humor
permeates American society so freely that it
has become a part of our nature. The press
the rostrum the theatre and even the pulpit
have caught the Infection and fun enters Into
our daily life to lighten our labors and diown
our cares.
The comedy of Our Strategists by Dr. T.
II. Sayre of New York is claimed to have
been written just for fun. It is called a farci-
cal comedy because that term more clearly
expresses Its character but it is vastly different
from the class ol plays recently Introduced by
that title. It is pccular In Its originality full
of unexpected situations numerous sur-
prises and bright Ideas that leave
a lasting impression npon the auditor
long after other memories are passed away.
The plot Is perhaps the most Ingenious piece
ol dramatic construction ever placed before
the public; beginning with a simple little
domestic story of "two souls with but a single
thought" It becomes a terrible tangle a-
parently beyond readjustment. But the un-
ravelling of tbe long string of denouements
mistakes and mishaps is watched with
humorous Interest and the heatty and in-
cesstnt peals of laughter which convulse the
audience are the best proof of its unqualified
success. This brilliant company will appear
Sunday night at Turner Opera halt. 1 1 .30-31

Elltor Ban Antonio Light.
San Antonio November 30 1883. Dear
sir In your issue of the 27th instant under
the head of "Light Flashes" you inquire
"Isn't it about time that some physicians ex-
hibited their 'sheep skins' to a curious but in-
terested public!" I would like to inform you
and the "inteiested public" that the Legisla-
tors of the State of Texas have been very
generous in this respect for they compel
every physician to have their diploma regis-
tered and stand an examination before a
Hoard of Censors before they are allowed to
practice. The "Interested public" could go
to the court house and see if the M. D "s
diploma is registered. But very unfortunately
it has as yet not provided for a prolesiion
which holds as many lives In hand as tbe
physicians (the pharmaceutical) and even
more so for oft times mistakes could
be corrected had we more competent
pharaclsts in the profession. All Ihe
Legislators deemed It of sufficient
ii portance to make laws and regulate the
practice of medicine. Couldn't we by some
means show them the necessity of a law to
regulate the practice of pharmacy. The I'bar-

maccutical associstion of tbe State have
gone so far as to frame a law to present at the
nest regular session of the Legislature.
Couldn't we by combined effort get them to
pass a law of some kind at the coming call
session and appoint a board of censors and in
this way aid in getting a law to regulate practice
of pharmacy. It is only that you seemed
very much interested in the practice of medi-
cine that I write you this letter and urge you
to lend your support to pass a law for the pro-
tection of the "interested public."
Very respectfully yours

The item in the Light of the 28th instant
in regard to the pavement in fiont of Ihe
Methodist Episcopal church seems premature.
I will defy any one to produce a better
material and if we can have first-class
material combined with cheapness why should
not the citizens have the benefit of it.
