preached an eloquent sermon on Thanksgiv-
ing day. The Statesrasn published two
columns of It.
Tixas Is overrun with tramps. A tramp is
not a poor msn unable to get work where he
cam: from and going through the country In
search of It but is a constitutionally lazy and
worthless fellow determined not to work.
The tramp is a sponge.
The items of State aews carefully compiled
from our State exchanges renders the Light
lavalnable to those who wish to keep posted.
This column of compiled news will be ccn
tlnued in the Light and renders it a mip
showing current events in Texas as well as in
San Antonio.
Tile following sensible item is from the
Gonzales Inquirer: "A movement is on foot
In San Antonio to convert Into sewers the
rivers that meander through her crooked nar-
row streets. These sparkling streams are the
chief beauty of the Alamo city and we hope
the movement will not carry."
Tin Houston' Age says: "Because some
documents relating to interests o the Ssn
Antonio district and upon which Congres-
sional action Is to be asked were sent to
Senator Coke Instead of to Representative
Hancock some of the papers say Hancock is
deeply affronted and he will woik against ap-
propriates for San Antonio. But Hancock
Is not so big a fool as those pspers seem to
sunn ne is. lie Is not ready yet to politically
din-nbowel himself."
Thi Brenham Banner says: "The Demo-
crats have always been famous for fighting
among themselves they invariably have side
Issues that do not Involve any cardinal prinei-
ple but yet serve to make discord in the
parly. There are too many wouli be leaders
who act on the rule or ruin policy." The
Houston Age the Democratic file leader
copies the above with approbation but had
the Uoht said the same thing all the small
fry Bourbon newspspers would have bawled
out that it was Radical prejudice.
Thi TJmes of yesterday stated that Colonel
Upson was now playing the role of political
editor of a San Antonio newspaper referring
doubtless to the Eapress ; but with all due
respect the Light regards the statement as
Incorrect on account of the pressure of businei s
which demands all the time and energies ol
Colonel Upson. He is industriously and
busily electioneering among the people for a
nomination to Congress and consequently he
his no leisure for editing the politic! depart-
ment of a newspaper. Colonel Upson is just
bound to go to Congress next year he could
not possibly survive another defeat -and he
It trying lo pull the wool over the eyes of
the people by going in for protection. His
business elcction-scrine for Conrmi h
band-shaking with the people leaves him no
leisure lor writing political leaders. His
wools soul is in ms present business.
On THI subject of advertising the Gatesvllle
Advance says i "The San Antonio Light
echoes the sentiments of the Advance when
It refers to advertising agencies. In a majority
of cases the are frauds The paper that
givesthem the bigeit "ad" Is Invariably put
down as havicg the largest circulation. We
long lo see the dsy when newspspers will in-
sert foreign advertisements at the same rates
they demand from their neighbors. In one of
these "directories" the Advance is put down
as a paper without any politics and that in-
serts a lo line notice al $ a month I When
they correspond with this oQIce they get quo-
tations a little' above those given our home
advertisers and our columns are contpiciout
bya remaikable absence of their dead head
cuts. Newipapers can fix their own rales
but most of them are oo weak-kneed to do it.
We don't belong to that class."
Tilt city of San Antonio urgently needs the
following improvements Sewerage suifsce
drainage more lamps on the streets belter
sidewalks and the suppression of reckless
riding and driving in the streets and the only
way to obtain them Is for the people to elect
live and progressive men to the Council and
t vote for the sewers. Voters must certainly
realise the importance and neccsiity of these
Improvements and realising this they can
not as sensible men avoid emphasizing their
views by their votes. All persons whether
tlch comfortab'e or poor are deeply Inter-
ested In preserving the health of the city and
ought to know this cannot be done except by
proper santtaiy regulations and precautions
which will prevent the accumulation of filth
and garbage within the city limits. The
Light is opposed to any extravagant and use-
less expenditure ol the people's money and
1 1 in favor of letting out the consttuciion o
the sewers to the lowest bidder after due ad-vcrt'iem-nt
and cutting off all chance for
corrupt bargains and jobs If $100000 will
suffice no more bonds should be voted. We
a lviie voters to study this question earh one
for himscll and to vote as his own judgment
shall dictate remembering his own health and
perhaps his life are Involved In the decision
of this question of sewerage.
Tint telegraph states that a memorial has
been presented to Congress charging United
States Judge Turner with nepotism of the
worst sort and with culpable neglect of duty in
holding the terms of his court but does not
state by whem this m-rmrial was signed and
forwarded. We bad heard a rumor some days
past that some misunderstanding and ill-feeling
existed between District Judge Tutner and
District Attorney Evans in reference to the
failure of the former to hold the last term of
the court at Brownsville but as JudgeTurnei's
wife had fallen and broken one ofherarmsour
Impression was that Us omission at that lime
was perfectly excusable. The Light desires
to see all public servants from the highest to
the lowest made to do their duty and has no
idea of attempting to screen any officer Re-
publican or Democrat from merited censure.
Nepotism is worse in a Judge than it is in any
other officer ironr' llie fact that clerks and
deputy clerks are under his control and super-
vision and may be screened from exposure by
him if they should be guilty of malfeasance or
misfeasance. Judges cannot be too free from
partiality prejudice or favontism find if Judge
Turner has been guilty of the acts of nepotism
charged upon him his conduct deserves the
utmost reprehension. Whenever the rublic
lose confidence in the impartiality and Integrity
of a Judge he shfluld resign. The Light
not being the henchman or the mouthpiece
either of Judge Turner or District Attorney
Evans "takes no stock" in any personal
quurel between them its only concern is with
their official conduct. We hope Congress will
investigate the matter.
Tin San Antonio correspondent of the
Houston Post of December 5 professes to
give an interview with one of the leading
fence cutters but as the name of neither
party is given the alleged Interview may be
pure fiction. If the sentiments which are
pit Into the mouth of this nameless fence cut.
t :rare participated in by any considerable por-
tion of the people Texas has stirring if not
bloody scenes ahead of her; for the platform
is "we don't mean to allow any min'to fence
up the asnge we want a fiee range and noth-
ing else will satisfy us." That is unadultcr-
a ed lawlessness and agrarlanisra an unequi-
vocal denial of the rights of property and an
insolent defiance of the majesty of the law
and the power of the State. We are unwil-
ling to believe any considerable number of
Texans entertain these sentiments as they
are contrary to Justice civilization and law
and would arrest the progress of Texas as
well as inflict wounds upon her prosperity
which would not heal under 35 years. But
the State must throttle and crush any such
agrarian and lawless spirit cost what it may
and must meet It with boldness and courage.
That is the only course to be pursued. Make
a person whj shall lence land he does not
pay a fine of $5 per acre lor each acre
so fenced and compelli!m to remove such
rence in 10 days provide for public and pri-
va'e roads forbid the enclosure of over a
certain number of acres in one pasture und
tnen protect fence owners by the entire power
and lorce of the State from lawless men.
