Chicago Decmber 8 The Citizen
whose editor John F. Fmerty member ol
Congress aided In originating the Parnetl
'und and the large fund which was used in
the defense of O'Donncll contains a leading
editorial in Its current issue on the conviction
of O'Donncll and declares that as a result of
the trial a "parly of violenct" will henceforth
be supremo in Irish politics. The paper de-
clares that O Doonell's killing Carey waa the
boldest avengemcnt of history and the most
honorable. His conviction by the usual
E-glish hanging jury and the inevitable par-
titan English Judge has put an end forever in
Ihe Irish mind to all hope of ever obtaining
ordinary lus'ice from Englishmen. Alter
again declaring that it will never again give a
cent to delend any Irishman in a Butlsh court
of law and never contribute or advocate the
contribution ol any more money unless it be
for ihe purpose of stt iking terror into ihe
demon hesrt of the overgrown dastard that
telltales at no crime to maintain Its iniquitous
power and that never falls to whine abjectly
when forces superior to her own are applied
to make her quad the editorial says:
"O'Donnell will no doubt be hanged on De-
cember 17. The Irish race failed to save
him. It must not fall to avenge him." The
editorial still further declares that England
ahows no mercy and that Ireland will no
longer show any and that while England
points to her ships and cannons Ireland may
point and that too soon to the wreck of
the Parliament buildings and the ruin of St.
Paul and suggests that a New Zealander
may yet be seen on London bridge trying to
cress it on planks."
New York December 8. John Swinton
recently wrote to General Sherman Inclosing
a newspaper clipping containing some
wotds upon capital and labor attributed to the
General. The words are to the effect that
General Sherman bad recently predicted that
there would soon come an armed contest be-
tween capital and labor and that the better
classes art tired of these insane bowlings of
the lower strata and mean to stop them.
General Sherman in a reply which he pub-
lished la John Swinton's paper tays t "I
hardly know whether to treat this seriously or
In jest. Of course it Is cot true but that you
already know because the report on Its fsc.e
carries Its own contradiction. I'm sure the
words capitsl labor run powder and cannon
never were spoken I don't think the New
York papers of to-day reported me as a
Erophet at the printed paragraph you sent;
ut distance and time swells the rumor In the
ratio of the cube of the distance. Our news-
papers it seems to me are utterly reckless In
their misstatements. I commend you for
your manly way In writing me and if you will
sleep sounder I will be clad to say that In
my opinion in no epoch or period in our
national history has our country enjoyed a
larger measure of prosperity than to-day; that
never was there less reason to apprehend
danger from without or within. I am sure no
friend of mine has been disquieted by this ab-
surd bnndle of nonsense and contradiction.
It simply increases the vanity and self esteem
of Ihe smart boys of the press whose imsglna-
tlons are bettepthan their judgment and who
claim the noble privilege of invention or
whit used to be called 'Ijlng' leavirg the
humiliating right of denial or explana'lon. I
address you as a man not as an editor and
leave you Iree to dn what you think best in
Ihe premises. With great re-pect yours
ttuly W. T Sherman."
