Tiif. Pittsburg l'enn. bank failure was
the boss of them all.
Tildkx and reform will not prove n
very good card for Hie Democrats If tlie
cypher dlaiatchea amount to anything
na an olT-aet.
The Chamber of Deputies of .Mexico
lias appropriated $10OnuO to defray the
cxpensea of that Government at the
World's exposition at New Orleana.
A New York lawyer waa recently
lined $ 2U0 for elmply kicking a Chicago
lawyer out of his olllce and paid It on
the ground that so great n luxury waa
cheap at any price.
A doctoii writing to a New York pa-
per deprecatea the publishing by the
press of coses of hjdrophobla na he said
In nine cases out of ten the fear of the
disease brought It on.
Tiik Huntsvllle Item Is ns bright and
pleasant as a new dollar In Ha new dress
and proves the old adage of publication
by lire. The Light wishes for It un-
bounded prosperity In the future.
"Texas" says tho Kl Paso I.one Star
"has as good evening papers ns any
.State In the Union. Tho Austin Capital
Ban Antonio Light and several others
we could name are hard to excel.
To-iuy the Kepubllcan National Con-
trition convenca at Chicago and It Is
safe to say that there la a full troop or
dark horses staked out In and around
the Exposition building of that city.
Tiik way the banks are going In the
Knit Is suggestive of the dark days of
1S73 and It speaks volumes for the proa-
perity of the country that amid the
multitude of failures there la no panic.
Tim opposition to Governor Ireland
from some quartern does not seem to
effect a boom In delegates and Judging
from appearances he will have no trou-
ble In again getting the Gubernatorial
persimmon.
Tiik anxious candidate seems to be
coming to the front In a tolerably line
style If one can judge from the large
'number of announcements to be found
In the weekly papers of the State. The
desire to hold olllce la the peculiar fall-
ing of the great American citizen.
Caitaix 1'. E. I'barsox of Itlchmond
Fort JJend county Is being boomed
quite vigorously as a Democratic candl
date for Congressional nomination In
the Shoe String district. The Nation of
that city thinks that If W. If. Craln la
the nominee that Ochiltree will easily
win the election.
Tint llrltlsh Hon may well put his tall
between his legs when they get to giv
ing Fourth of July dynamite explosions
In Scotland yards but It is carrying
war right Into tho heart of Africa so to
speak and the detectives of that famous
quarter oan spend their time prolltahly
In searching for the perpetrators of the
late explosions from the plain clues
furnished.
Hox. V. O. Kino of this city Assist-
ant Commissioner of the New Orleans
World'a Exposition for the tenth Con-
gresslonal district has Issued a circular
to the Honorary Commissioners Invit-
ing them to attend a meeting to be held
at the court house In this city on Fri-
day June 20 to consult together. A
concerted action on the part of all will
enable Texas to make a creditable dis-
play on that occasion and being the
most wealthy and Important State In
tho South nothing should be lelt undone
that will add to her prosperity or her
people.
"The use which the Democratic party
lias made of Its opportunities In Con
gross" says the New York Times "gives
the Kepubllcans an excellent chance to
recover their control of that body. But
in order to do so they must be united
and1 must exert their full strength.
Whether or- Dot they are to be united
and in a position to oxert their strength
depends on the nomination) to be made
t Chicago. Should the ticket be one
Which a considerable portion of the
party tylll not 'support and which will
not command the Independent and In-
i
dllTercnt vole there will bo no possibility
of recovering Congressional districts."
Tiik Chicago Times says; "The col
ored delegate learne by experience Ilo
haa discovered that the climate of Chi-
cago la altogether iinllko that of his own
sunny South. He kniws lhat while lie
la sunning himself behind hlanatlve cot-
ton gin or smoke house Chicago people
aro going about the streets In overcoats
or sitting nt homo by the lire. In 1SS0
he didn't know these things lie came
o Chicago III n while duck cont low
vet w liltc pantaloons and n straw hat;
and his ryes gleamed In astonishment
at the change In the weather nnd his
glistening teeth knocked together with
the cold. This year tho advance sain-
les of lilui that hae already appeared
at the hotels are draped In cloth of a
warmer texture and like himself In
color and n 'plug' hat. Four years ago
some of them would havo sold them-
selves for n corner by n llrcplnce; now
they will require a stronger Induce
ment."
The reports of Senatorial Investlga-
lug committees are about as uncertain
as tho verdict of ajury. The New York
Times speaking of two Iato reports
very tersely says: "The llcpiibllcan
Senatorial report concerning the Dan-
ville disturbances exaggerates what
was a lamentable allalr Into the propor-
tions of a sanguinary political plot to
kill and terrorize. The Democrallo Sen-
atorial report relating to the Copiah
county Investigation distorts the few
facts which It touches beyond n polit-
ical vendetta by calling It neighborhood
feud and attempts to distract attention
from the main point nt Issuo by a rhet
orical flourish which bears no more rela-
tion to tho Coplali county massacro
ban it does to the resolutions of 17HS or
the Saybrook platform. Until of these
reports are unqualifiedly partisan and
oth were composed with other nlms
than those which would guide straight
to the truth.
The Grant and Ward and Marine bank
failure grows more unsavory aB the
details of the business aro made known.
Ward seems to have possessed nil ami
very qualification necessary for a suc
cessful bunko steerer nnd his methods
are no better lie Is a most slick rascal
and handled the business of tho firm
alone and with the confidence of all con-
cerned. It la to bo regretted Hint Gen
eral Grant nnd his sons have aunercd
such serious losses but a prudent and
an honest business mnn would havo
examined Into the methods of the
schemes of Mr. Ward nnd put a stop to
them before the Inevitable disaster
came. Mr. Grant Is entitled to no sym-
pathy whatever for It looks very much
like It was his connection silent though
It may have been with the firm Is what
gave Mr. Ward such lino opportunities
to play his grand confidence specula
tions. A stripped suit for nrd nnd
economical penance on the part of tho
Grants will In a measure wipe out I lie
disgrace of this grand collapse.
Tiikiik has lately been n great huo and
cry raised because Juries have not done
as the public expected In n number of
Instances and loud demands have been
mndo for the Improvement of the system
nnd the banishment of tho professional.
It was claimed and with good grounds
that the ends of tho law were not
reached nnd great criminals did not In
any measure pay tho penalty of their
crimes. Hut along with tho demand
that the pistol and the professional Jury-
man must go something should bo ilono
with the man who goes around asking
signatures to a petition requesting n
pardon for some man who Is serving n
term In tho penitentiary. This Is as
great an evil as any of the others and Is
fur more pernicious because the knowl-
edge that a pardon can be obtained al-
lows men of cowardly natures to give
full away to their passions where other-
wise they would not. The only way
that crime can bo suppressed Is to make
punishment swift and sure and that Is
why the man who circulates a pardon
petition should bo seized and loaded
with Irons and made to serve out tho
unexpired term ho wns trying to client
the llllnd Goddess out of.
A emoiiKii clergyman of Galveston
II. J. Davis In a letter to the News In
answer to some statements made by
Senator "ltutabaga" Johnson regarding
the colored race winds the Senator up
In the following most effectually: "The
good people of Texas have declared that
the coming man must nnd shall be edu-
cated regardless of race color or servi-
tude and (vox popull vox del) the peo
ple s voice Is the voice of God. Politi-
cally the negro Is behind every race of
mankind but this Is owing to the fact
of his Intellectual deficiency which has
prevented that unanimity which Is the
very sheet-anchor of race pride. Finan-
cially he Is also behind. This can be
nocounted for when you remember his
commerolal Inexperience nnd a lack of
the knowledge nnd rule of economy and
not being capable of handling money to
any great advantage. He Is behind In
other respects. Hut it can not be ex-
pected that the uneducated negro could
have been accomplished within 20 years
what It took the educated white race
centuries to attain unto. Hut under the
leadership of such men as now stand at
the head of affairs these Intellectual de-
ficiencies will be eradicated or washed
away by the streams that flow from
public sympathy. Many thanks to you
public oflleials for the good you have
rendered us as a race struggling for In-
tellectual life. We will always endeavor
to show our high appreciation for these
Inestlmabble favors. A word more.
The political situation of the negro Is
pltlml beyond description. It js said
that he Is used by one party as a tool
and Is therefore looked upon by the
other party as a fool. Hut let us alone
and we will assuro you that the day Is
not distant when the negro will without
hesitancy not only choose but go with
the party that will give him public recog-
nition. Again to the Senator. Please
let the "nigger" as you call him alone.
Grant this request not so much for the
colored man himself ns for Ids deplor-
able condition who never offended you
but venerates your person respects your
honor and esteems your virtues."
