bodies of silver-lead orcs and it is
expected that shipments will soon be
made.
To Clean Out Shaft.
Im Fortuna mines in the Guada-
lupe y Calvo region has been taken
over by Cleofas Quintero who is pre-
paring to do some work in straighten-
ing up the shaft and cleaning out the
old workings.
A E. Rodriguez has discovered some
silver veins in the vicinity of Cusi-
huiriachic and has filed on five ad-
joining claims which are registered
as the Dolores group. Some surface
work is being done and a shaft is to
be aunk on the vein.
New prospects have been located in
the Morelos district by Miguel Moya
who is uncovering some high grade
silver-lead ore with gold values. He
is having a group of 42 claims sur-
veyed which are recorded as La Pal-
milla.
There are no other mines adjoining
but Mr. Moya is confident that he
will develop a good producing prop-
erty with a reasonable amount of de-
velopment work.
The vein can be traced for quite
a distance on the surface and assays
taken from various places give good
results.
Applies for Titles.
Santiago Aguirre has applied to the
Chihuahua mining agency for titles
to the Fortuna mine situated in the
municipality of Aldama. southwest of
the Buena Vista properties. The ores
this region carry gold silver
lean and copper. Engineer Juan Ri-

Oki Workings Believed to Contain
Valuable Ores.

are composed of five claims each-and
•re traversed hy a strong vein of ail-
ver-lead ore. Several old workings ex-
ist from which ore was extracted by
former owners prior to the revolu-
tion.
It is probable that some of the old
shafts will be cleaned out and sunk
deeper. New shafts and fronts will
also be opened up in order to extract
the ores to an advantage.
La Grulla mine situated in the
Tres Marias mountains southeast of
the Inde camp has been acquired by

as La Palnnca and adioins the Domi-

Oil companies while that at Panueo
is a contract job.
Panuco has become the center of

essential that the roads be put in
shape to obviate the absolute cessation
of travel which has always taken place
in years when the heavy seasonal rains
have made them impassable.
The paving to Avenida Hidalgo the
gpain thoroughfare to the colonies has
been indefinitely suspended by the con-
SMctcp until arrangement is made for
payments covering the continuation.

HEAVY OIL OUTFIT LEADS.
Production Exceeds That of Light
Fields in April.
Tampico. Mex. May 26.—Produc-
tion of heavy crude during April ex-
ceeded. for the first time over a
monthly period that of the light oil
district. In that month . withdraw-
als in the Panuco fields were 6183.-
000 barrels while light oil production
was 5422000 barrels. In March
light oil totaled 6250.000 barrels
against 6000000 barrels of heavy
crude.
For more than two years the Mexi-
can Petroleum company has been the
greatest individual producer of oil in
Mexico mainly light crude from wells
in Cerro Azul Tierra Blanca and
Cbapapote Nunez. It still leads in
light crude with nearly 50 per cent of
the entire production but its total is
rapidly being approached by the Dutch
Shell which is now taking 100.000
barrels of heavy crude daily front
wells in Cacalilao and Ojital which
are expected to increase as soon as
new lines are completed.
Practically four-fifths of all Pan-
uco withdrawals are by the Corona.
Transcontinental (Standard of New
Jersey) and the Sinclair in conjunc-
tion with the Empire Gas and Fuel

000 barrels daily. This amount how-
ever is far below actual potential and
with facilities now being construct-

daily within the next 30 days.

ures for May just issued by the Sec-

price for fuel oil In the New York

MEXICAN GOVERNMENT SEEKS
DATA CONCERNING SMELTERS
BUILT IN MINING DISTRICTS
Nation Advanced Money for Establishment of Treat-
ing Plants Near Mines—Owners Complain That
Charges Are Too High—Activity Noted in
Section Around Zacatecas.
Mexico City May 26.—The Depart-
ment of Mining through its inspec-
tors of mines is seeking to obtain
data in order to ascertain just what
benefits are being derived from the
smelters which have been established
throughout the republic with liberal
aid of the government.
Many of the richest mines are sit-
uated in remote districts far from
cities and railroad communications
making it difficult and expensive to
transport machinery and supplies to
them or freighting the ores out.
As a consequence very few of . these
regions although many of the mines
are fabulously rich have their smel-
ters or mills for treating the ores at
home.
The lack of sufficient capital to
overcome these difficulties is a draw-
back to the prompt realization of the
great mining boom to be expected lat-
er on in this country.
Nation Aids Industry.
The national government fully real-
izing the importance of the mining in-
dustry has lent aid to the establish-
ment and multiplication of smelting
plants by authorizing liberal conces-
sions. Principal among them are three
at Monterey and one at Asarco Tor-
reon Saltillo Mazapil BoleO Teziut-
lan San Luis Potosi Chihuahua and
Cananea.
There is a general complaint on the
part of shippers that the treatment
charges are entirely tooo high and the
government should compel the smel-
ters to give better prices and the rail-
roads should reduce the freight on
ores in order to stimulate the indus-
try.
These points and others are to be
studied by the Department of Mining
with a view of encouraging mining to
the very utmost.
RICH MINES ACQUIRED.

are also employed in hauling ore from
the Valenciana camp which is lo-

Guadalupe Robledo of Zacatecas

croup of mines in the Pinos region.
They are located nenr the old Sm
Sabas Candelaria and Tres Glorias

of gold and silver. Some of these
properties have been worked to a
great depth and now require addition-
al capital for the installation of ma-
chinery in order to operate them suc-
cessfully.
Beniamin Garcia of San Juan de
Guadalupe is preparing to begin op-
erations on the Salomon mine in the
Reyes district. This mine has a good
