'According to these figures the cost
f living hasn’t gone up in more than
decade. For they are practically
he same that ruled the market when
he gangsters in the famous Rosen-
bal murder and Barnett Baff cases
scused the spotlight on the organ-
sed murder of the East Side under-

These figures aren't of course

Jocko Moore and others.
They too. have passed victims of

Young and Good Dressers.
The type remains the same.
A typical gangster is about 25
years old often less a neat dresser
usually sporting a striped silk shirt
with a large diamond stickpin in bis
tie. pale anemic looking short in
stature shifty-eyed and soft-handed
He isn’t brave: and rarely fights
with his fists. His weapon is a re-
volver. And he usually travels in
packs.
Each gang has its own little sphere
of influence. Infringement on this
right of domain precipitates open
warfare.
Occasionally comes a free lance
who will sell his services to any
gang.
Foremost among this group was
Harry Kramer known in the under-
world as “Itchy Fingers” and “Hook-

Nose Lefty.* He began his terror-
ism when he was 18.
Sentences to Sing Sing didn't stay
bis efforts. He became one of the
most dangerous gunmen in the city
always ready to sell his trigger-finger
to the first bidder.
But his reign was cut short last
October when ho was killed in a duel
with a paymaster's guard in a daring
hold-up ‘5O yards off Fifth avenue.

The Dropncr who got his name by

or more as his retainer.
Gang War Breaks Out
Other gangs tried to edge in. Open
warfare resulted. .
Chief of the opposing gangs were
the Little Augies. Not only were
they rivals for protection work but
one of their number had a sweetheart
desired by a Dropper.
One day as he was escorting the
girl a Little Augie was killed. It
was believed the Dropper got him.
Vengeance was sworn. As result
the Kid was dropped as he was leav-
ing the courtroom after being ex-
amined for his connection with the
shooting.

Bill Lovett war veteran was an-
other gangster who went down at the
hands of a group of rival gunmen.
Leader of n group operating in
Brooklyn he won the enmity of
many opposition gangsters. One
night he was found shot and beaten
to death under the Manhattan bridge.
Another famous Brooklyn gnng
was known «a the Greenpoint Sav-
ages. It was headed by Jocko Moore.
He was not ns picturesque as Lovett
nor did he have as many notches in
his gun as the Dropper but he was
a gangster who had risen from the
ranks.
Ue started with the Hudson Dust-
ers of the West Side. But he wasn't
content with being a “bloat.” He
wanted to become a leader. So he
blazed his way to leadership. But

New gang wars are smoldering
Kid Dropper's liteutenants are wait-
ing for a chance to get even with the
Little Augies. But Jacob Orgen the
chief is in Sing Sing completing a
sentence for which ho once has beer
released on parole.
Just what effect the arrests of the
gunmen in the Brooklyn bank hold
up murder will have on the gangstci
situation is still obseurc. But it it
believed that the men who actually
did the shooting were hired profes-
sional slayers who mny squeal and
give away secrets that may lead to a
general clean up.
But New York gunmen have
weathered such cleanups before.
And they don't seem to be worrying
that their operations may be crimped.
