In Society
Changes come about so gradually
a rule that they are barely notice-
able. The tiered s^irt sneaked in
and last year this same style would
have been a shining example of what
the well dressed woman should not
wear. The weather nearly always
changes gradually and it is only after
Buffering with dengue that one remem-
bers when to put a coat on and when
to take it off.' . . .
Hut there is a new era in dancing
that can no longer be ignored. And
it didn’t come about gradually either;
it burst upon society. And worst of
all it is called The Flea Hop which
justly describes it. It is a cross
between an Indian war dance and a
setting up exercise. There is one
beauty about the dance it canS last
long what with the skinned shins
utter exh.-istion and torn frocks it
causes the participants. Even those
anywhere in the vicinity are endanger-
ed when the flea hoppers are in full
swing. It’s much better than diet-
ing for reducing but it’s so hard on
the innocent bystander that there
should be a law prohibiting it in-
doors.
Our great great grandmothers if
they could but see! And thank good-
ness that they can’t. They who
thought the minuet just a little bit
daring would swoon behind their
fans of lace before they could find
their tiny bottles of smelling salts
or sweet flag or peppermint. And it
is doubtful even then if mere champbor
or nminonia would revive them.
There was a time when folk stopped
doing the Virginia reel and the
quadrilles and square dances—those
quaint Bteps in which the whole com-
munity daneed together and first
began the waltz. How the Chaperones
did raise their lorgnette and eye-
brows and whisper and blush for
those bold young things. And then
a good deal later and not so long ago
the one-step and rag caused the same
disturbances on the side lines. And
■now the flea hop which is substantial
proof that the world is degenerating.
There is a rustic simplicity or
perhaps it is a primitive rhythm
about the flea hop that is more
natural than the frenzied feverish
jazz steps. There is just a hint of
the charm that folk danees have. But
folk dances were done out of doors
in the great open spaces which is a
good thing to remember. Then it
must* keep one in splendid condition
for it is far more fatiguing than
tennis or polo or boxing at least
it looks far more fatiguing. Now.
is an ideal time to give a barn dnnce
if one has an old but well built barn.
Better still if one has an open un-
ploughed field—but flea hopping can-
not last long even if Americans are
strong and hardy people and so until
it makes physical wrecks of the en-
tire race—on with the dance!
This coming Veek is filled with

Ick will entertain Monday evening
