Construction!
Why did Ruth Koenig, chairman of the Com-
munist Party, publicly denounce CLARK W.
THOMPSON of Galveston, candidate for Con-
gress from the Ninth District, in a signed state-
ment issued August 6, 1947, at Galveston?
Because Thompson called the hand of this
enemy of the American people, and because he
stands FOR what the Communists are AGAINST.
Factories are turning out this
equipment faster and faster.
JL Besides a telephone in-
strument, we need cables
and switchboards to fur-
nish telephone service.
But the need is nation-wide.
In the Southwest alone equip-
ment is needed in 700 cities to
serve 235,000 people. 1
We are getting our share
of what the factories pro-
duce and we’re putting it Y
in as quickly as we can.
By ingenuity and hard
work, we’ll have this job
licked one of these days.

When you begin to push that
pencil across the many names on
the ballot at the election box,
do you ever stop to think why
this candidate is listed before
that one, or why John Smith’s
name is two or three names be-
low or above Timothy Brown’s?
Why your choice candidate may
wind up last on the list?
The answer is very simple, the
whole system or order being
determined by the drawing of
the names for positions on the
ballot. In the congressional elec-
tion to be held on, Saturday,
August 23rd, George P. Barron
heads the list of the nine can-
didates in the race. His name
and the names of the other eight
candidates were written on
small slips of paper and put in
a hat. Sheriff E. E. Reinecker
placed another hat on top of the
one with the names, and gave
it a good shaking. County Judge
W. D. Bryan drew the names,
one at a time, with County
Clerk Lawrence Dittert number-
ing each name and listing it in
the order drawn. In this fash-
ion, Mr. Barron’s name was
drawn first, followed by V. M.
(Malone) Stokes, Morris Schrei-
ber, George W. Hill, L. J. Su-
lak, Ben H. Faber, Robert H.
Abell, J. C. Trahan, and Clark
W. Thompson, in respective or-
der.

Five American Priests
Named to be Bishops
The apostolic delegation an-
nounced in Washington recently
that Pope Pius XII has appoint-
ed five American priests to be
bishops, including:
The Very Rev. L. Abel Cail-
louet, Baton Rouge, La., who
was named titular bishop of Se-
tea and auxiliary to the Most
Rev. Joseph F. Rommel, arch-
bishop of New Orleans.
Mrs. Buchanan Sees
For First Time Dam
Named For Husband
Mrs. J. P. Buchanan and her
son, James P. Buchanan, Jr., and
his family have returned to
Brenham from Buchanan Dam
where she saw for the first time
the huge dam that bears the
name of her famous late hus-
band who pushed through the
first appropriation to start the
structure.
Buchanan Dam, the longest
arched dam in the United States,
is named for the late Congress-
man James P. Buchanan. His
widow has just now for the first
time seen this monument and
the bronze plaque of her hus-
band which it bears. She des-
cribed as “wonderful” the mas-
sive structure which stands as
a memorial to her husband’s ef-
forts while he was congressman
for the Austin district and chair-
man of the house appropriations
committee.
Mrs. Buchanan lived on in
Washington for 10 years after
her husband’s death, recently re-
turning to the old family home
at Brenham.

in the Columbus field, Colorado
