Married Friday Afternoon
Miss Margaret Blankenship of Mc-
Allen and Alfred R. Nordmeyer of
Mercedes were married Friday after-
noon at 4 o’clock with- the Rev. W.
W. Stratman, pastor of the Luther-
an Church in Alamo officiating at
the ceremony performed in the
church parsonage. • Those attending
the bride and groom at the ceremony
were Mrs. J. T. Ward of McAllen,
sister of the bridegroom and Z. S.
Blankenship of McAllen, brother of
the bride.
Mr. and Mrs. Nordmeyer are now
making their home in the Saladino
Apartments. Mrs. Nordmeyer is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. M. A.
Blankenship of Wichita, Kansas. Mr.
Nordmeyer is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. E. F. Nordmeyer of McAllen.
He has been living' in Mercedes for
the past two years, employed by the
Central Power and Light Company.
Mr. And Mrs. Leon Clark
Entertain Bridge Club
Mr. and, Mrs. Leon A. Clark enter-
tained the Tuesday Night Bridge
Club at their home this week. In the
games Mrs. E. G. Smith won high
score for the ladies and George
Baumgart won high men’s score.
Dainty refreshments were, served at
the close of the playing. Art Biel
was a guest of the club and the fol-
lowing members were present: Mr.
and Mrs. M. A. Borchelt, Mr. and
Mrs. George Rippert, Mr, and Mrs.
George Baumgart, Dr. and Mrs. E.
G. Smith, Miss Ella Borchelt and
Paul Shotwell.

Baptist Auxiliary Has
Business Meeting Tuesday
The Baptist Women’s Auxiliary
held a business and social meeting
at the church Tuesday afternoon of
this week. Mrs. J. C. Potts, presi-
dent, presided at the business session
and Mrs. A. C. Cope led the devo-
tional service. Members of the
Esther circle acted as hostess during
the social hour when a delicious re-
freshment course was served.
Miss Nan Bates Is
. Honor Guest At Party
. Miss Nan Bates was named guest
of honor at one of the most delight-
ful parties of the past week given by
Miss Mary Elizabeth Cope Thurs-
day evening. An evening swimming
party was followed by attending the
theatre. From the theatre the guests
went to the home' of Mr. and Mrs.
A. C. Cope, parents of the hostess,
for a slumber party. A midnight
>lunch was served to the following
guests of the evening: Miss Bates,
Miss Verna Rose Gauch, Miss Bonnie
Jean Acker, Miss Jackie Johnson,
Miss Jeanette Jones, Miss Priscilla

Miss Bates is leaving within the
next week for California where she
will spend the summer with her sis-

Women Attend Pan-
Hellenic Luncheon
A number of Greek letter fra-
ternity women of Mercedes® attended
the Valley Pan-Hellenic luncheon
held at the Reese-Wil-Mond Hotel in
Harlingen Friday at 1 o’clock. Mrs.
Henry Lauderdale' of this city had
charge of the program which con-
sisted of a vocal solo by Mrs. H. E.
Hager and a solo dance by little Miss
Effie Jean Tolson with Miss Anne
Ferguson acting as piano accom-
panist for each.
Following the luncheon bridge
was enjoyed with ‘ Mrs. Douglass
McKenzie of Edinburg winning the
high score prize.
Mercedes people at the luncheon
included Mrs. Hager, Miss Ferguson,
Mrs. Lauderdale, little Miss Tolson,
Miss Sara Haynes, Mrs. J. W. Cham-
bers and Mrs. Effie Jewell Shekell
of Amarillo, a guest here; in the
home of her sister Mrs. Art Tolson.
Presbyterian Auxiliary
Has Meeting At Church
The Presbyterian Women’s Auxi-
liary met at the church annex Tues-
day afternoon for a business session.
Mrs. Ben Stafford, presided. Plans
were made for a penny luncheon to
be served in the church annex Sat-
urday, June 16 from 11:30 a. m. to
1.30 p. m. .
Entertains Honoring
Mrs. Lon C. Hill, Jr.
Mrs. D. W. Glasscock entertained
at bridge and luncheon at her home
on Llano Grande Lake Friday of last
week end. Mrs. Don G. Hill, Jr. of
Winnetka, Ill., who is visiting in
Port Isabel, was named guests of
honor. Games of bridge were play-
ed in the morning followed by
luncheon at one o’clock. Guests in-
cluded Mrs. Hill, Mrs. 0. Miles of
Progreso, Mrs. S. McCullough and
Mrs. McIlray of Port Isabel, Mrs.
Wimberley McLeod of Harlingen,
Mrs. Al Parker of La Feria, Mrs. S.
Gardner, Mrs. Morris Allen, Mrs. A.
N. Brown, Mrs'. D. R. Brower, Mrs.

Mrs. W. J. Copeland entertained
the Coterie Bridge Club at her home
near Mercedes Friday afternoon. In
the games of contract Mrs. R. Maier-
hofer won the high score prize.
Guests included Mrs. Maierhofer,
Mrs. W. W. De Vine, a guest in the
Copeland home; Mrs. Effie Jewell
Shekell, a guest in the home of Mr.
and Mrs. Art Tolson; and Mrs.
Leona H. Copeland. Members pres-

Mrs, J. W. Chambers, Mrs. Art Tol-

Bridge Club Hostess
Miss Anne Ferguson entertained
the members and guests' of the
Thursday Afternoon Bridge Club at
the home of her parents Mr. and
Mrs. Charles Thornton, last week
end. Miss Merry Andrews was
awarded high score trophy at the
close of the games. Miss Doris Gar-
rison and Mrs. Frank Jones were
guests of the club and the following
members were present: Miss Helen
Drefke, Miss Maudine Blankenship,
Miss Amy McManus, Mrs. Charlie
Carr, Miss Merry Andrews.
. The club meets next on Thursday
afternoon, June 14 with Mrs. Charlie
Carr as hostess.
Westmoorland College
- Male Quartet To Sing
In Mercedes June 12
The Westmoorland College male
quartet of San Antonio will present
a program in the Methodist church
in Mercedes Tuesday evening, June
12 at,8 p. m. Vice-president G. D.
Pickens of the college is making the
tour of South Texas with the quartet
as faculty representative and makes
brief addresses on the programs. ,
The quartet is composed of Yates
Dickinson, Kingsville, first, tenor;
Chester Ralston, McAllen, second
tenor; Herman Vetter, Castell, bari-
tone; and Homer Stokes, Maulden,
Mo., bass. Piano accompaniment
for the quartet will be played by
Miss Veva Emma Martinez, Kenedy.
Miss Martinez will offer solo selec-
tions also.
Complete schedule for the male
quartet on this tour has them listed
to sing in Methodist churches in the
following towns: Falfurrias, June 8;
Raymondville, Sunday morning June
10, and McAllen Sunday night; La
Feria, June 11; Mercedes, June 12;
Weslaco, June 13; Donna, June 14;
Pharr, June 15; Santa Rosa, June
16; Mission, Sunday morning, June
17, vesper services at San Benito in
the afternoon, and Harlingen, Sun-
day evening.

Final plans were made for the
annual Sea Scout cruise of the Val-
ley council which started from Port
Isabel Thursday of this week. The
cruise will be in the Laguna Madre
and will last 14 days. ‘ Jeff Vining
of Mercedes is among those making
the-cruise.
The master committee in charge
of the Scout circus to be held in Mc-
Allen as a part of that city’s Fourth
of July celebration was appointed
Monday night. Dale Fagan of Donna
was made general chairman. Mer-
cedes men included among the 26
others on the committee are R. L.
Lyon, J. L. Leslie, Captain F. A.
Taylor and R.- R. Douglass.
Dr. R. E. Utley of Harlingen, who
is now in Buffalo, N. Y. as Valley
council representative at the nation-
al Boy Scout convention, will give a
report of that meeting at the next
meeting of the board.
Mrs. Charity Blackburn, agency
chief operator for the Rio Grande
Valley Telephone Company at Port
Isabel, who recently was awarded a
bronze Vail medal for her heroism
when the hurricane struck Port
Isabel last September 4, will receive
one of the six silver Vail medals to
be awarded to telephone employees
throughout the United States for
■“noteworthy public service” during
1933, according to announcement of
J. C. Paxton, general manager for
the telephone company. The silver
medal includes a cash award of
$250.
Vail medals are awarded annually
as a memorial to Theodore N. Vail,
late president of the American Tele-
phone and Telegraph Company. Reg-
ional bronze medal awards are re-
viewed by a national committte for
possible further recognition by silver
or gold medals.
Remaining at her post for five
hours while the hurricane raged
about the little telephone office,
Mrs. Blackburn maintained com-
munication until the last local and
long distance circuit was out of
service, leaving only after being
ordered to do so by the United
States Coast Guard.
J. A. Glover has been appointed
election judge for Hidalgo County
precinct number 21 to serve in the
democratic primaries July 28. The
presiding judge for the other Mer-
cedes precinct, number one, has not
yet been appointed.
Judges for 14 of the 23 election
precincts were named Tuesday fol-
lowing a session of the county Dem-
ocratic committee at Archer Park
in McAllen Monday night. J. C.
Looney of Edinburg presided. Lee
Freeman represented Mercedes pre-
cinct 21 and H. L. Goss, Mercedes
precinct 1 on the county Democratic
committee. :
John Kirkpatrick Of
Edinburg Addresses
Mercedes Rotarians
John Kirkpatrick of Edinburg,
outstanding Rotarian of the 47th
district addressed the Mercedes Ro-
tary Club Tuesday noon on the sub-
ject of “Club Service”. Mr. Kirk-

Mrs. J. A. Schupp entertained the
Embroidery Club at her home in
Weslaco Friday afternoon of this
week. Mrs. Otto Gessling, Mrs.
Frank Jones and Mrs, G. C. Borchelt
were guests of the club for the after-
noon and the following members
were present: Mrs. Arnold Krause,
Mrs. Alvin Reisterer, Miss Ella Bor-
chelt, Mrs. A. Twenhafel, Mrs. W.
Bandemer, Mrs. M. A. Borchelt and
Mrs. George Rippert.
Methodist Auxiliary
Circles To Have Social
Meeting Next Tuesday
The circles of the Methodist Wo-
men’s Auxiliary will hold their
monthly social meeting at the home
of Mrs. Oscar Roman next Tues-
day afternoon at four o’clock. The
social meeting date was changed
this month from the fourth to the
second Tuesday afternoon.
The circles met at the home of
members Tuesday afternoon of this
week for mission programs. Circle
one met with Mrs. H. T. Tidmore as
hostess at her home.
Circle two and three met together
at the home og Mrs. Harold Row-
land. Mrs. Ed Herring had charge
of the devotional service and Mrs.
Lewis Henry and Mrs. George Potts
gave talks on the Mission program
Mrs. Henry telling of the “Begin-
ning of The Weslay House Move-
ment” and Mrs. Potts of the “Work
of the Wesley House.”
The Junior circle met with Mrs.
Ben Drew as hostess at her home.
Mrs Clyde Jones, had charge of the
program on Methodist mission
schools for Mexican children. Mrs.
Bayless, Mrs. Nix, Harrington and
Mrs. Jones each gave talks on this
subject.
• During the business session Mrs.
Faye Fikes was elected chairman of
the circle for the next three months
to take the place of Mrs. Harring-
ton who will serve as president of
the Auxiliary at large in the absence
of Mrs. H. L. Schmalzried.
Loyal Workers Club
Has Quilting Party
The members of the Loyal work-
ers Club enjoyed an all-day quilting
party at the home of Mrs. Ernest
Larsen last week. At noon a pic-
nic lunch was, served brought by
those present. Guests of the club
for the’ day were Mrs. Vera New-
man Crockett and Mrs. John New-
man. Members present included Mrs.
E. E. Etnire, Mrs. Ben Etnire, Mrs.
E. J. Drefke, Mrs. Ben Oldemeyer,
Mrs. Lawrence Wise and Mrs. M. A.
'Borchelt.

Valley met at the city hall audi-
torium in Mercedes Wednesday night
for the purpose of organizing the
local administrative committee which
will administer the code of fair
competition for electrical contrac-
tors in Hidalgo, Cameron, Willacy,
and Star counties.
Representatives of practically ev-
ery Valley city were present. W. F.
Wortham of the Wortham Electric.
Co, Weslaco was elected chairman of
the local committee. I. N. Hargis
of the Hargis Electric Shop, Browns-
ville, and Ernest Barth of the Barth
Electric Co., Harlingen were elected
to represent Cameron and Willacy
Counties, J. W. Martin of the Martin
Electric Co,-McAllen and H. L. Scott
of the Mercedes Electric Co, Merce-

and Starr counties.

juster of the N. R. A. was present
and addressed the meeting. A meet-
ing was alled for June 14th at 8
P. M. in the new Federal Building at
Harlinge nat which time the require-
ments for compliance with the N. R.
