break since his role of Frank
James in the outlaw picture, “Jesse
James,” and he tops anything he
has yet done in the current, “The
Young Mr. Lincoln,” showing at
the Paramount.
Strangely enough for a film with
such a basically historical plot and
background, it has nothing to do
with the Civil War nor with more
than a smattering of Abe Lin-
coin’s political activity.
It begins with the young Abe
Lincoln studying Blackstone’s
“Commentaries" in the backwoods
of Illinois, takes him to the legis-
lature and sets him off with the
first important criminal court case
he won. It introduces, but doesn’t
elaborate on, the political opposi-
tion of Stephen Douglas.
The celebrated case he wins is
the murder trial of the Clay broth-
ers, accused of killing a deputy
sheriff. When the state’s star wit-
ness describes the slaying in bright
moonlight, Lincoln produces an al-
manac showing that on the night
of the murder the moon was in its
first quarter and had set 40 min-
utes before the crime.
Our old friend, the anonymous
letter writer came through with a
“guest column” as he had promised
last week, but he neglected to sign
his own name and disappointingly
failed to produce the masterpiece:
we had been expecting. We are
grateful but ...

A planeful of celebrities, includ- to Hollywood” auditions being held
ing Anita Louise, Wendy Barrie,
Edmund Lowe and Jesse L. Lasky
will arrive here about 8 o’clock
tonight at the municipal airport.
From here they will be transfer-
red into a 21-passenger American
Airliner rechristened the Flagship
‘ Jesse L Lasky for the occasion,
and will be taken to Fort Worth
to participate in the “Gateway to
Hollywood" contest.
Beginning at 9:45 and lasting
until 10:30 tonight, the celebrities
will be interviewed on the plane by
Bess Stephenson and Katharine
Howard of the Star-Telegram, the
interview to be broadcast from the
plane via short wave.
Bess Stepnenson writes that a
former Abilenian, or at least a for-
mer student at Abilene Christian
college, is shining as one of the
likeliest prospects in’ the “Gateway
in Fort Worth this week.
He is the Rev. Fred McClung,
29-year-old pastor of Highland
Park Church of Christ in Fort
Worth.
Tall, good-looking brunet, he
came up with his wife Tuesday to
try out before Eddie Sobel, the
Lasky director. Blessed with an
excellent voice and dramatic sense,
he was put down as one of the
certain contestants.
The young pastor was given en-
couragement by Billy Rose and
one of the M-G-M talent scouts
last year, and now he’s made up
his mind if there’s a chance at
all, he’ll take it. He has been in
the ministry 11 1-2 years, and has
had four years experience as a
radio evangelist.
