Judge Denies .Youth Bail
as Attorneys File Ap-
peal Motion.
MASON Mich. March -11.— CW—
Arthur Rich son of a wealthy Bat-
tle Creek manufacturer has been
found guilty of criminally assault-
ing Louise King. 20-year-old co-ed
and sentenced to life imprisonment.
The verdict was returned late yes-
t'-rday by a jury in circuit court and
Judge Charles B. Collingwood im-
mediately announced sentence refus-
ing a motion for admission to bail
■lending an appeal.
Arrangements have been completed
for the removal today of Rich to the
state prison at Jackson.
The assault occurred on the Buttle
Creek Country Club golf links May
25 of last year.
Miss King testifying in the case
as complaining witness said she had
gone on an automobile ride with Rich
and another couple and that Rich had
lured her from the automobile to it
lonely spot on the links on the pretext
of showing her where he made “a hole
in one" in golf the previous day.
There she testified he struck her
breaking her jaw. and assaulted her.
RIO GRANDE WATER
APPORTIONING URGED
WASHINGTON. March 11.—OP)—
Senator Sheppard. Democrat Texas
has taken up with the State Depart-
ment the question of a more accurate
apportionment of the water of the Rio
Grande between Mexico and the Ele-
phant Butte reclamation project near
El Paso.
I nder a treaty agreement. Mexico
is allowed 60000 ncrc-fcct of water
but since more settlers have come in
on the project and the demand for
water has increased American inter-
ests feel that a closer check should be
made to see that the water is distri-
buted properly.
