Dock Harris the notorious Imrsethlrl.

by a l.iiiur reporter to whom he made
following statement :
I am acciissd of 'rating' mules anil
horses. I II veil nt Moore's station In Frio
county at the time these hones were
stolen. Some of the mutes I purchased
from Joe Cardenas eight mules and
horses. They arrested mo orer In Alas-
osa county near Itossvllle. Three
rangers came up and arrested me. They
claim these mules belong to (lutierrer.
He lives nt San Diego. I have been liv-
ing In Texas since llTi and I was with
the Lulled States troops during the
.Mexican war. I was also 111 the con-
federate army mid this Is the llrst thing
1 hale ever Inn! against me In my life.
I got Into this accidentally. I hate been
trading herein shesp ever since 1" till
the last twiiyears. I stayed at the Cen-
tral hotel hut at Sawalsky's store
a great deal of the time. I hsvc three
hojH ami six girls one oftliem Dnn Har-
ris has been here over u couplo of
months on the same charge as I am here
for. I am not at the head of any gang.
I never received tho erder for M) horses.
An order was given and the Ml head
were stolen and delivered Into the
stockpens. The men did lion thelronn
business.
1 feel Inclined to turn State' otidmre.
I can tell on about 10 or 15 men they aie
the worst of the kind. The order
for some horses was given In February.
I don't remember who gave the ordir
some northern dealer. Some of tho
horses were stolen In the vicinity of
town They operate about other parts
besides San Antonio and hate been do-
ing It for n number of years. All the
men are residents of Texas mid If I
werifcoutslde I could muster up 10 or
1'2 now. They used to make their
headquarters right here In town by
some hook or crook. I can't tell you
anything about the Inside working of
the stock yards; they generally keep
their horses ill pastures. I have netcr
got any horses over the Itlo (Irande. I
was not long enough In the gang to
learn all particulars. I Just Joined to
ferret thcui out because aoout five years
ago they stole 00 head of horses belong-
ing to me. The llrst thing after I
looted up nere was 1 110 stealing 01 Htn
of my hast horses and three mules. They
made a proposition to me to go In work
and steal and drive horses. It was on
account of leaving that much more
business for them and n place to stop at.
I could not run about at night be-
cause of iny eyesight. That Is Just
why I got Into this kind of thing; 1 am
fci years of age nnd It Is the llrst time I
was ever arrested. I have been handling
and driving cattle by the thousands.
They would pick up tho horses Just
where they could II ml them and they
sometimes used to blotch t lie brands
with a running iron. I don't remeiuLnr

was working with Captain. Smith trying
to get the thing fixed to catch tliesa

one of the fellows gavo me

and he went and told the rangers where
I was. My son-in-law I.. W. Williams
of C'arrlro Springs was negotiating with
Captain Smith.'1
The above named prisoner Is accredit-
ed with being the head of a gang of
horse thieves the most successful In
their operations In the southwest.
Hiring tneir operations over lamu norses
it is alleged have been stolen and
