Department reports spring wildflowers 'now at peak;'
bluebonnet patch, blooming yucca plants' locations told
Mercedes, Texas 78570 Wednesday, April 4, 1984
After December’s devastating
freeze, most South Texans are
cheering the arrival of spring - and
according to word from the State
Department of Highways and Public
Transportation, spring wild flowers
are now at their peak.
Although the flowers are not as
abundant in this area as they have
sometimes been in the past, they
are making a better showing than
they did the past two years.
If you’re planning, a Sunday
drive and want to view the wild
flowers, the Department suggests
the following areas:
In Hidalgo County, there is a
large patch of bluebonnets in the
median of US 83 Expressway
between FM 494 and Ware Road,
and the yucca plants which were
transplanted by the Department
from the Rio Grande City area are
beginning to bloom on the
Expressway near Metropolitan
Bank. On US 281 between SH 186
and FM 490, a few patches of white
prickly poppy, firewheel and
buttercups can be seen dotted with
clumps of blue-eyed grass.
US 77 between Lyford and
Raymondville has some bluebonnets
in the median mixed with yellow
daisies. Just north of Raymondville,
all the way to the end of the divided
highway, you may see a lovely
display of white prickly poppy,
golden wave, yellow daisies, purple

phlox, gaillardia (also called Indian
blanket or firewheel), and lantana.
From the point where the divided
highway ends to the Highway
Department comfort station, you
will see scattered patches of
Indian paintbrush and buttercups.
Continuing north on US 77
through Kenedy County, the
flowers are scarce until about four
miles south of Sarita. At that point
you will begin to see Mexican hats,
lantana, purple phlox, Indian
paintbrush, fluttermill, yellow
daisies, fleabane, and fairy thim-
bles. The area around the
courthouse has a display of all
varieties.
About three miles west of
Falfurrias on the north side of SH
285, there are two hills outside the
highway right-of-way with a
beautiful array of Hearts Delight
and this is one of the few areas in
the state where they may be found.
Along this highway you will also
see numerous wine cups, Indian
blankets, purple prickly poppy,
buttercups, white daisies, golden-
wave, yellow daisies and bluebon-
nets. While in this area, you will
want to drive north on FM 1329
where, for about eight miles, both
sides of the highway show a
brilliant display of firewheels, white
daisies, goldenwave, wine cup and
purple phlox. A side trip on the
County road between FM 3066 and
285 just south of FM 754 will also
be worthwhile.
FM 755, beginning about five
miles west of US 281, has large
patches of bluebonnets, and the
roadsides are sprinkled with
fleabane, wine cups in abundance,
firewheel, lantana, purple phlox and
patches of buttercups. You will also
see many clumps of a white
star-shaped flower. If this one is not
familiar to you and you need to
identify it, beware - it is the bull
nettle, and even the bloom is
treacherous.
FM 1017 for about 10 miles
north of La Gloria has wine cups,
groundsel, fleabane, bluebonnets,
lambs lettuce, white prickly poppy,
lantana and yellow cut-leaved
daisies.
Enjoy the view and drive
carefully!
