Happiness is
program topic
“The Secret of Happiness” was
the topic given by Mrs. John Karle
for the Dorcas Aid Society of
Immanuel Lutheran Church at their
Thursday afternoon meeting. Mrs.
Bill Mueller, vice-president, con-
ducted the business meeting.
A service project, underway to
make gowns for Retama Manor
Nursing Home, Weslaco, was
reported to have provided 19 gowns @
so far. Plans are to make bibs for
residents of Retama Manor.
BUILDING BODY AND CHARACTER are two of the many benefits of
athletics and two of the attractions the Mercedes Boys Club holds for
participants. Working up a sweat recently were Jaime Lara,
assistant karate instructor, standing in photo at left and sitting in
center, shown working with karate students, and Raymond Moya, at
right, who gets in a boxing workout. Details on club hours and
activity schedules are available by calling 565-3033. [Mercedes

Conserving water now means long-term savings
A swim party will take place for
the Sunday school classes, August
18, it was announced. A covered
dish dinner will be Sunday, August
26, honoring teachers of Immanuel
Lutheran School, the Day-Care
Center, and the Sunday school.
A city resident or suburbanite
who has all the water needed just
by turning on faucets may ask,
“Why should I save water?” There
are many good reasons why water
conservation affects everyone and
why all Texans should do their part
to conserve this precious resource,
caution specialists with the Texas
Agricultural Extension Service, an
arm of Texas A&M University,
according to Ida A. Patrick, Hidalgo

PUBLIC NOTICE
FOR
GUARDRAIL MAINTENANCE
District 21 of the Texas State
Department of Highways and Public
Transportation, Pharr, Texas, will
accept sealed bids for guard rail
maintenance on various highways in according to requirements of law,
the counties of Brooks, Jim Hogg, and the mandates hereof, and make
‘apartment. A typical household
uses 300 gallons a day. The cost of
water differs from one city to the
next, but it usually is about $1 or $2
for each 1,000 gallons used.
This money is used by the city
or water district to pay for
supplying the water. A second fee,
a sewer charge, is then levied for
treating the wastewater that is left
over. So, the less water you use,
the less it costs everyone today,
next month, and next year.
Second, when individuals collec-
tively use less water, the future cost
of developing new water supplies is
avoided. It costs huge amounts of

at 206 Sixth Street and see Mr.
Miguel Castillo, Jr., Director of

expiration of forty-two days from
the date of the issuance of this
citation, same being the 18th day of

Petition filed in said court, on the
28th day of August A.D. 1984, in
this cause, numbered C-2014-84D
on the docket of said court and
styled Elias Guajardo vs Unknown

A brief statement of the nature
of this suit is as follows, to-wit:
The East Five [E.5] Acres of the
West Ten [W.10] Acres of Block
Ninety-Two {92], La Blanca "B"
Subdivision of Lands in Hidalgo
County, Texas as per map recorded
in Volume 1, page 33, of the Map
Records in the office of the County
Clerk of Hidalgo County, Texas.
If this citation is not served
within ninety days after the date of
its issuance, it shall be returned
unserved.
The officer executing this writ
shall promptly serve the same
money to build new or bigger
reservoirs, pumping stations, pipe-
lines, water treatment plants,
sewage systems, and wastewater-
treatment plants. In most cases this
money has to be borrowed and paid
back for many years with higher
taxes-with your money.
Third, eliminating unnecessary
use of water means that more may
be available for emergency pur-
poses. such as fighting fires. Each
time you turn on the faucet, the
water pressure drops slightly
everywhere along the pipeline. This
means that less water can flow out
somewhere else where it may really
due return as the law directs.

be needed to save lives or property.
Fourth, using less water means
you are living in closer balance with
the natural environment. In many
cases, the number of people living
in a city or town is greater than the
natural environment can provide
for.
At first, water may seem
abundant but as the population
grows, water is used up faster than
nature can replenish surface water
supplies (rivers, lakes, reservoirs)
or underground aquifers. It may
take just a few years or generations
to use up what hydrologic forces
have spent thousands or millions of
years to put in place.
When this happens, the balance
of nature is destroyed, perhaps
irreversibly. When too much
groundwater is pumped, the land
may begin to sink (subsidence), or
salt water may flow into and pollute
fresh water aquifers. This already is
happening in some parts of Texas.
Another adverse effect is that
new surface water reservoirs and
aqueducts must be built, to bring in
new surface water supplies. This
may be at the expense of the
natural environment at the new
source, which is perhaps far away.
Reduced water consumption not
only saves potential water sources
from new development, it also
means that less wastewater is
produced that must be treated
before being released to the
environment. Sewage treatment
plants in many areas are already
struggling to produce wastewater
quality that meets stream water
quality standards.
Fifth, lower water use means
lower energy consumption in many
ways. It takes energy for fresh
water pumping, transportation in
pipelines, treatment for purification,
distribution to homes, and water
heating within the home or
business. It also takes energy to
pump and treat wastewater. So
when you save water in the home,
you save a lot of energy.
Sixth, the less water you use
yourself, the more may be available
for food production by farmers who
grow the grain, livestock, and
vegetables to feed families. More
water may also be available for
recreation and wildlife around lakes,
and rivers and more can flow
downstream to the Gulf Coast
where a rich harvest of seafood is
obtained in bays and estuaries that

The seventh reason to conserve
water is to help protect your own
future. There will likely be more
opportunities to obtain and retain
jobs in areas where enough water is
available at a price that can be
afforded.
