Editor,
The Enterprise;
I felt compelled to write this
letter concerning the capital murder
trial of David Castillo.
• 1 sat through every moment of
that trial and heard the state and
the defense present their cases.
1 heard the testimony of Sister
Dorothy Carey stating that the
defendant had “found the Lord.” It
is my sincere hope that this is true.
But, the fact remains that this
individual...(was convicted of
taking) a man’s life.
Can our society allow individuals
to commit such serious offenses and
then not be held responsible for
their actions?
As a parent and teacher in the
Catholic School System, I know that
discipline is an important part of
child development. Our children are
taught that rules should be obeyed
and that there are consequences to
certain actions; Will these children
grow to adulthood and learn that
they can choose to violate much
greater laws and that there will be
no consequences?
I would like to commend the
jury of 11 men and one woman on
the stand they took. They were the
judges of the facts and they were
courageous in their duty.
The district attorney, Mr. Rene
Guerra, did his duty to rid this
country of criminals who threaten
the peace and the lives of its
citizens; He knows about crime. He
is the one, who unlike defense
attorneys, deals with the families of
the victims. He sees the pain and
suffering that one individual can
cause.
Mr. Guerra has done his job,
and he is to be highly commended.
The people of Hidalgo County
are fortunate. The district attorney
and the jury in this case have made
a strong statement - a statement to
those who think it easy to violate
laws and “beat the system” of
justice. saaitlsa Iside
And a statement to defense
attorneys who think that dramatics,
smokescreens, and the twisting of
the truth can “beat the system” of
justice.
The defendant (was found
guilty of breaking) the law of our
land and the law of our Lord...now
he will pay.
This is as it should be.
The citizens of Hidalgo County
should be proud of their D.A. and
their peers who served as jurors.
Law-abiding citizens who have
had enough of crime and enough of
criminals who are set free to steal
again, kill again, and destroy
others’ lives owe them a debt of
gratitude.
I for one thank them, and the
Father who I believe guided them,
for their wisdom and their courage.
My faith in our judicial system
has been reaffirmed.

Exercise said key to keeping heart ‘young’
Regular exercise may be the key
to keeping your heart going strong
past age 70, according to a
geriatrics researcher at Houston’s
Veterans Administration Medical
Center.
Robert J. Luchi, M.D., chief of
medicine at the VA and professor of
medicine at Baylor College of
Medicine, is conducting a study to
determine how the heart ages in
exercisers and non-exercisers past
the age of 70.
“It may not be the process of
aging itself that causes the heart to
pump less efficiently, rather it may
be the lack of regular exercise as
people age,” said Luchi. “We think
that with proper conditioning, the
heart may work as well for many
people at 80 years as it did at 20
years.”
Luchi cautions that before
anyone begins an exercise program,
they should get a thorough physical
examination from their physician.
A healthy heart beats 100,000
times a day, pumping blood
through 60,000 miles of vessels.
Oxygen-rich blood is taken from the
lungs into the left side of the heart
and pumped through the arteries to
the body. The blood then goes to
the right side of the heart, where it
is pumped back to the lungs and
the process begins again.
Luchi is testing the heart
efficiency of elderly patients by
measuring the amount of blood
pumped out of their hearts with
each contraction, or “beat.” The
blood volume is measured by
injecting a harmless substance into
a patient’s bloodstream. The O
marker substance is detected by a
sophisticated camera and a com-
puter determines the percent of
blood pushed out of the heart
“A healthy heart pushes 50
percent of the blood out with each
contraction and with exercise the
amount can increase to 60
percent,” said Luchi. “A heart with ,
poor function only pushes out 30 to •
40 percent of the blood per
contraction and that percentage
goes down when the person
exersices.”
Luchi offers these recommenda-
tions for people over the age of 40
beginning an exercise, program:
-- Get a complete physical
including an exercise electrocardio-
gram. •
— Begin any exercise program
slowly and with a doctor’s advice.
-- Exercise regularly, at least 30
minutes three times a week.
-- Continue to have yearly
check-ups.

When he tried to sell me a
smaller air conditioning unit,
I thought he was kidding.
1 told him I wanted another four-
ton air conditioner to replace the
one that wore out. Then he started
, telling me how it might be too big
for our house. And since we’d
been using four tons for years, I
was confused.
“But, then he explained that a
central air conditioner that’s too
big for your home is just as bad, as
one that’s too small - maybe even
worse. It won’t control the
humidity well enough to keep you
comfortable. And it wastes energy
- uses more electricity than you
really need.
"I wound up with a unit a ton
smaller than the old one. I wanted
a high efficiency model to save
energy, so I made sure I bought
one with an EER/SEER of at least
8. The unit I finally settled on, in
fact, is rated 8.7.
“And you know, it’s doing a great
job! We’re more comfortable now
than we ever were with the larger
unit. And I really think our electric
bills are lower now, too."
Whether you’re buying air
conditioning for a new house or
replacing the system in your
present home, you can save money
by choosing a unit with the right
cooling capacity for your needs.
Ask your dealer to size your new
unit correctly. CPL will be happy to
work with your dealer.
