LOCAL JUSTICE ATTENDS SEMINAR -- Some 92 justices of the
peace attended a 20-hour Texas Justice of the Peace Training Center
seminar, October 2 to 5, in Corpus Christi. The training center is
based at Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos. The
seminars are conducted in compliance with Article 5972, Section B, of
the Texas Revised Civil Statutes. Among area judges attending were,

According to Ron Patterson,
executive director of the State
Property Tax Board, the Texas
Property Tax Code provides that,
once an “over-65 tax deferral”
affidavit has been properly filed,
taxing units may not pursue or
initiate delinquent tax suits on the
homestead as long as the applicant
owns and lives at that property.
Patterson said that forms for the
defferal affidavit are available at
local appraisal district offices in the
state.
Patterson stressed that elderly
homeowners should realize that the
deferral only allows payments to be
postponed, not dismissed. “During
the period of deferral, the amounts
of delinquent taxes, penalties and
interest continue to add up,”
explained Patterson. “Once the
applicant no longer qualifies for
deferral -- that is, if he no longer
owns or resides at that homestead'
