Dear Mercedes...
Letters from F.S. Lentz, Jr.
Goza
Look at the way the life was lived...
We speak of things done, much done
use the word achievement; ganas, fits as well,
but still does not get enough of her life lived.
She practiced an economy of words
because she knew their value.
These came from the wealth of living that
she had amassed.
Came from the knowing she had earned,
was deposited in us in greater or lesser amounts
but for all and each, in the truest
of interest bearing accounts.
Because anyone who knew her received an inheritance,
a trust fund, funded by her,
the rate of return left up to us.
I opened my account with her at
age small neighbor boy, indebted into
Steven’s black lunch box leftovers walking
That same eye when turned on one
found doing something wrong could wither any
words of excuse and escape
Look at the way the life was lived...
She looked in the face of events sent her way,
hard ones, and chose to not just survive, but to prevail.
Those things in their hardness acquainted
her with sorrow, travail. They had to have
yet she chose to know of flourishing, on
through long years, daughter and sons in hand,
she moved through these, strongly,
teaching as she went, a teacher in the truest sense
to this day no one amassed such knowing as she
of the land the homes the tongues the family
of the town Mercedes, where her life was held
and yet few as well knew more of the larger earth beyond.
She went and was in it
At Adulthood I saw her slides listened when
she described the pagan wonder and strange
floral richness of Bali and in the same voice
home from school, third grade, she made good lunches, with some wistfulness carefully traced the
then cookies and Koolaid raided from
her kitchen. Later, as a cub scout follows
the pack she was den mother to us many cubs,
helped grow boy to man.
Somewhere is a planter painted red made from
a five pound coffee can, trimmed with
clothes pins beneath her guiding eye.
history of the Fernandez home...
As one invested in, given venture capitol
by her, one day while kite flying on the canal banks,
she said “you can, you know”, I return and say
with Rev. Adam: “We give thanks for the way
Goldsby taught life.”

Dear Mercedes,
Hello there, y que pasa?
I am leaving you, just now, in Dal-
las switching planes. I am foggy, more
than usual, because of the early
Harlingen launch.
In Marine fighter squadron terms it
would be wheels up at o dark 30;
civilians would say five fifty three
a.m., and for VanBerg, M., Herold,
D.W., Cowden, A., Miller, M., and
King, B., Mickey’s hands are straight
up and straight down...
This thing is gonna be long, as
your eye-sizing function has already
warned you, so take another sip of
coffee.
Mrs. Goza’s memorial service was
Saturday morning past.
In separate correspondence en-
closed herein is my earnest effort to-
ward the unusual life of the esteemed
Mrs. Goza. Let me be clear, those are
chosen words in that previous sen-
tence. It would not be fitting to address
that subject here. Hopefully, those
other words will speak for themselves,
as her life most certainly and elo-
quently did.
In being there for the 29 hours I
was, and now back in Coral Springs, I
will say thanks to those who said they
read this stuff. And I have to clear up
at least one gaffe:
One of the bunch dining on the
very tasty feral hog that Darius shot,
dressed, preserved and cooked, asked
if I did the writing on these things
while flying. My answer was no.
Well, the re-considered answer is
yes, mostly. This one started on a
Fokker 100, then on to a Boeing 727,
and finishes here. The others, on the
Atlantic crossings and other long trips,
were written, as well, in flight. Cor-
rected, for the record.
Had come down for the services
from Doc Conwell’s in Huntsville.
That rejoining came about as a direct
result of this meager letter writing. It
will be long and long before 1 can There we sat, in their living room,
digest all the transpired there, and get Three of the most intensely active,
it written down, then longer before I caring, alive humans I’ve ever been in
can begin to repay the personal kind- the presence of, and me. One never
ness and hospitality given me. Marg- knows where 10 stitches put in an
aret Conwell and Halford Conwell,
M.D., are world class human beings,
and more. It will unravel. He wrote a
piece for his paper on where he was
when the bombs were dropped. It is
masterful, and I will try to snitch it for
you.
He wore his Mercedes Flying Ser-
vice cap and showed me a picture of
our own John Schwarz, and much time
was spent on the life of Lloyd Nolen.
We made at least one dusting type pass
in his plane, my first moving cockpit
since 1991.
He is a good stick.
He is an unlikely looking 71, and
owes that to Margaret Conwell. If you
thought that there were only Renais-
sance men, you are mistaken. Marg-
aret is a Renaissance lady. The plea-
sure was mine. Margaret introduced
me to a Ms. Betty Williams, one of her
closest friends, a lady she works with.
Betty is Irish and won the Nobel Peace
Prize in 1977 for her work in Northern
Ireland.
ankle will lead...
Ms. Williams’ fighting back of
tears over the recent passing of her
father is something I won’t forget.
The likeness of this lady and Goza
wasn’t lost on me; each in their time,
and in their way. Ms. Williams under-
stood more clearly than I that likeness,
as I related Goza, as I knew her.
On down to Mercedes: I got to hear
from some of you who read this thing.
Thank you for your words. For the
greatest food ever, Kath, for the good
company...all. Stop calling that beau-
tiful little girl, Melbourne, and check
your pumps, to make sure the arrows
point north. If they don’t, talk to
Michael Miller. What a time, and as
they say on TV — Hi, mom.
I’ll see if I can raise my “C-minus”
to a hard “C” on this one. Hope you get
some rain, Howard, after the cotton’s
out.
