She had membership with the First
United Methodist Church of Mercedes,
health allowed. She moved to Bellaire
earlier this year, where she was greatly
comforted in her last days by the lov-
ing and attentive care of her daughter-
in-law, Ellen, to whom the rest of the
family is very grateful.
She is survived by her daughter,
Helen Jean Goza, of Mercedes, her
son, Wray, and his wife Ellen, of
F. De la Garza mass set
A memorial mass will be celebrated
for Fernando de la Garza, who died in
Laredo on June 29 at the age of 48, at
historic Saint Joseph’s Chapel at
Toluca Ranch in Progreso on Sunday,
August 13, at 5 p.m.
Reverend Craig Carolan of Holy
Spirit Catholic Church of Progreso
will officiate at the service for the
Brownsville native. Funeral services
took place last month at Saint Patrick’s
Catholic Church in Laredo, with burial
at Laredo City Cemetery.
He was educated at Saint Joseph
Academy of Brownsville throughout
his formative years, graduating from
Saint Joseph High School in 1964. He
received a Bachelor of Science degree
from what is now the University of
Texas - Pan American, Edinburg, with
majors in English and philosophy.
He completed his graduate work in
Garibay dies at age 65
Funeral mass was conducted Au-
gust 1 for Luis Rene Garibay, who
died Saturday, July 29 at the age of 65
in Alice P&S Hospital, after a sudden
illness.
A retired U.S. Labor Department
employee and retired rancher, he was
a U.S. Marine Corps veteran.
Survivors include his wife, Santitos
C. Garibay of Alice, former Mercedes
Bellaire, her son, Steven, of Houston,
and her son, David, and his wife, Tina,
of Richmond.
There are also seven grandchil-
dren surviving: Wray’s children,
David, and his wife, Arleen, of Bellaire,
and Donald of Houston; Steve’s chil- •
dren, Gretchen Goza of Dallas, Brigett
Goza of Port Isabel, and Phillip of
Houston; and David’s children, Sara
and Benjamin, of Richmond.
She died peacefully in her sleep on
August 1 in Bellaire, with her family
at her side in the hours before her
death.

For many years, Mr. De la Garza
served as Administrative Assistant to 1

He was instrumental in computer- |
izing all transactions in BISD’s Busi- 1
ness Office in the early 1970s. He later
entered the private business sector as a
sales and instructional representative
for IBM in the United States and Span-
ish-speaking countries of Mexico and
Central America.
He retired from IBM in Laredo in
1992, and served as an Assistant Prin-
cipal at the new John B. Alexander
High School (United ISD) which
opened that year until his death.
He was formerly married to Dr.
Christina Fernandez, local educator.
resident and a graduate of Mercedes
High School; three daughters, Sylvia
Tver of Lithonia, Georgia, Sonya
Fitzgerald of Arlington and Sandra
Forson of Burleson; and two sons,
Louis Rene Garibay II and David Alan
Garibay, both of Alice.
Also surviving are two brothers,
Miguel Garibay of Joshua and Fran-
cisco Garibay of Long Beach, Califor-
nia; and four grandchildren, Mandy
Forson, Josh Forson, Christopher
Fitzgerald and David A. Tver.
Brothers and sisters in law include
Carmen Rodriguez, Josefa Hinojosa
and Mike Cadena of Mercedes, Nico
Cadena of California, Maria Elena
Garcia of Desoto and Carol Tovar of
Smithville.
A rosary was recited Monday, July
31, at St Joseph Catholic Church in
Alice. Funeral Mass was celebrated
Tuesday, August 1, also at St. Joseph
Catholic Church. Burial followed at
Alice Fraternal Cemetery.
WEDDING APPROACHES—Mr. and Mrs. Eari Weber of Harlingen
announce the engagement of their daughter, Julie Michelle, to
Ian Field Gibbons, son of Rev. Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Gibbons of
San Antonio. The couple will be married in a 6 p.m. service
August 19 at Crestview United Methodist Church of Austin. The
bride-elect, a graduate of Harlingen High School, is a chemical
engineering major at the University of Texas at Austin. To be
graduated next spring, she is presently an intern with Dow
Chemical Company in Freeport. She is the granddaughter of the
late Mr. and Mrs. H.C. Billings of Mercedes and the late Mr. and
Mrs. O.M. Weber of Harlingen. Her fiance, a graduate of Crockett
High School of Austin, holds a bachelor's degree in psychology
from UT-Austin. He is employed by Round Rock Independent
School District.

WILL NOT BE PROMOTED.
All teachers have a daily forty-five (45) minute conference period that they can use for parent-teacher
conferences. Please schedule a conference with your child’s teacher if you feel one is necessary. This should
be done through the principals office.
Tutoring services for failing students at grades K-12 will be provided. Students not passing will be
required to attend. Transportation for tutoring services will be provided by the district
