investor, active volunteer, dedicated volunteer, avid volunteer.

27, 1996.
A former president of
the KMC Board of Trustees,

Medical Center Foundation
and served as President for 11
years. He had retired once
from the Foundation Board
and was again serving as a
Foundation director at the

Coming
Soon
To KMC
Knapp
Medical
Center will
open its
new
Hyperbaric
Wound
Care Center
soon. This
new service will be located in
the old Physical Therapy area
which is currently being reno-
vated.
The goal is to help
patients recover from chronic
wounds (a wound that hasn't
healed within several weeks or
more) through the use of hyper-
baric oxygen treatment.
Patients who benefit
from this treatment include those
with diabetes, peripheral vascu-
lar disease, and those who have
suffered trauma and/or burns.
KMC's Hyperbaric
Wound Care Center, under the
direction of John Galan, a regis-
tered respiratory therapist who is
certified in hyperbaric medicine,
will see patients who have been
referred by their physician.
For more information
about the new Hyperbaric
Wound Care Center, please call
969-5185.
Knapp Medical Center's
Emergency Department
provides 24-hour physician
coverage, seven days a
week, and is one of the
busiest in the Valley.
Emergency Rooms work
on a triage system — not
a first come, first serve sys-
tem. A triage nurse at
Knapp Medical Center
assesses each patient and
determines who is the
most critical. The patients
who are the sickest are
seen first. This is why
patients with non-life
threatening health prob-
lems may have a long wait
especially during winter
months when the flu sea-
son is here.
When coming to an
Emergency Room, please
be prepared to tell the staff
what happened, when it
happened, and what first
aid treatment was given.

Hispanic Americans are five times more
at risk of developing diabetes than any other
ethnic group in the United States.
An estimated one half of the 13.7 million Americans with Type II or
non-insulin-dependent diabetes do not know they have the disease.
As a result, they are vulnerable to the damage high blood sugar can cause
to blood vessels, the heart, kidneys, eyes and extremities.
How could someone not know they have diabetes?
Either from lack of knowledge (not knowing the symptoms)
or because their symptoms may not be very noticeable.
Annual blood sugar screening as part of a routine
medical examination can identify diabetes early,
before serious damage occurs.
