News from Mercedes High School...
When elections for MHS Student
I Council offices took place last May,
the student body elected Lisa Perez as
president and Amanda Soto as vice
president.
Other officers named included Sec-
■ retary Ruby Salas, Treasurer Daniel
| Avila, Parliamentarian Amanda Torres
and Historian Jessica Sosa. Reporter
for the council is Rebekah Cuadra.
Editor is Artui o Gonzales while Petra
Ochoa is Sergeant at Arms.
The officers interviewed official
members of the council for positions
on the executive board. In order to
qualify for an interview, the appli-
cants had to meet the criteria of a short
essay on their views and ideas for the
council and 100 signatures on a peti-
tion. Five applicants were interviewed
and all of them received positions on
the executive board member. They are
Amanda Perez, Ramon Ocanas, Jen-
nifer Gonzalez, Carol Zapata and Paul
Kelley.
Student Council meets regularly
on Monday, unless otherwise an-
nounced, from 4:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. in
room M-8.
Members of the Council will be
selling Tiger T-shirts. Many may re-
member “Tiger Republic” T-shirts sold
a few years ago, but Precision Screen
Graphics, a company from Austin, has
improved the design and the shirts
should be here within two weeks. They
will sell for $10 and can be purchased
from any student council member.
Community involvement is being
encouraged in order to make Home-
coming 1996 more successful. A com-
munity candlelight pep rally will be
incorporated into this year’s home-
coming festivities, and alumni are
urged to contact Student Council Spon-
sor Sophia Guerrero at 514-2100 in
order for alumni performances to be
incorporated into the pep rally
agenda...from ex-Debonnaires to ex-
Cheerleaders to ex-Band members.
Former football players are also
urged to call Mrs. Guerrero so they
may be recognized at the rally. Local
businesses and organizations, as well,
are invited to assist with the rally.
Chairperson of the Homecoming
Parade and Pep Rally committee is
Arturo Gonzales. Please keep reading
for announcements of alumni meet-
ings.
