This letter is in response to the

Yes, Mr. Arguelles you are exactly
: correct in that we are serving only as

my community on this board for the
last four years. From 1981 to 1984,1

OFFENSE
DEFENSE
Editor,
The Enterprise;
There has been much discussion
about welfare reform in recent months
at the national level and now at the
state level. I have just completed an-
swering a questionnaire about welfare
reform (and other topics) from State
Senator Drew Nixon.
I think that Father Ralph Beiting
has some helpful ideas on the subject.
I have just finished reading his book,
“Pilgrimage of a Country Preacher.”
He has spent 45 years in Appalachia.
He says “Handouts only enslave people
and make them dependent. Although
there is nothing wrong with meeting
the emergency needs of people with-
out food, clothing, medicine, and hous-
ing — God commands us — but to set
people free from poverty we mu st pro-
vide jobs and business opportunities.”
Father Beiting set up a woodwork-
ing shop, specializing in bookends,
cutting boards, and candlestick hold-
ers. This gave men an opportunity to
feel pride and s ati sfaction in their work,
as well as a means of supporting their
families.
He helped a man set up a dairy
farm, which now has several hundred
dairy cows and is self supporting.
His group set up a sawmill in the
hardwood forests in Eastern Kentucky,
also an agriculture greenhouse farm
that now brings in sales of a million
dollars a year. Other projects include a
Christmas wreath factory, ceramics
workshop and silk screening.
Recently they helped a local busi-
nessman create a company called Ap-
palachian Environmental Products.
The Company makes a line of outdoor
furniture from recycled plastic milk
bottles.
Father Beiting says, “I know there
are a million other ideas. I invite any-
one with business ideas to bring them
here.” His address is 322 Crab Or-
chard Road, Lancaster, KY40446. Ask
for his book “Pilgrimage of a Country
Preacher.”
LEADING GOLF ASSOCIATION — Golfers
above were recently elected as officers for
the Llano Grande Golf Association. They are,
from left, Bo Ramos, treasurer; Cesar
Montelongo, vice president; E.J. Garcia, presi-
dent; Homer de la Rosa, handicap chairman;
and Polin Serna, tournament chairman. Not
shown are Domingo Briones, secretary and
Rolando Maldonado, entertainment chairman
and sergeant-at-arms. (Enterprise Photo.)
