Dear Mercedes.
Letters from F.S. Lentz, Jr.
Dear Mercedes,
La Madama, Juana Flora Carbon,,
became Sepulcaras.
As much lady as Vento was man.
Whatever frivolity attendant to Juana
was known only to Vento.
Ready to smile, and
could laugh a full, thorough laugh at
good humor, she also had only a
thought away, parts, strict,
straight, and upright.
Strikingly pretty. Mistress of
those private feminine practices
that showed visitors and the joven only freshness and grace.
Wheat and milk colored skin
dark twinkling eyes. She had moral strength
and intelligence that could crush.
But he was awed at how they
resolved into each other’s intelligence.
Neither gave held ground, yet met
gently off to the side.
Juana was the woman who kept track of things. Of Vento.
As much of Vento as he allowed
to be kept track of.
A person knowing of
the complete world, which
she still went far into. Yet
always she returned to their built
place in the rocky country at the
end of the caliche road.
And fully expected him to do the same.

Vento chuckled in his dry rich way.
What gets me the joven said is that
most of the places that began all that are gone.
This is the only place to tie them to.
And you. You older ones.
You all are going away at the same
speed the good places are.
Even Diaz hardly looks like it did
when I was a kid.
Yes, that’s right said Vento. Entonces?
So I decided to have me a day. And I am.
Yes, and La Madama is going to
have your hide and mine if I
don’t get us moving said Vento.
As dexterous with important people
from a life she was born to that
took her to the major cities of the world,
as she was at penning goats,
raising her and Vento’s children or cooking beans.
The younger one had been uncomfortable in their presence
when discussion between Juana and Vento edged toward
important disagreement.
IT’S A TRADITION in Room 35 at Kennedy
Elementary to use a cookie contest as af un learning
tool. Teacher Yolanda Martinez says it’s “a great
educational experience,” reinforcing reading and
graph-making skills, as well as teaching some of
the fine art of baking. The competition is conducted
each year in conjunction with the reading of the
story, “The Doorbell Rang.” Students above were
Yes, Vento, this day got to me.
I have been fighting this nagging ragged idea,
probably most of my life, that
we get it wrong.
That I’ve gotten a lot of it wrong.
I never outgrew being a boy.
Being so damned influenced by a day and its weather.
No matter where I was or how old.
Maybe because of growing up around here.
The hotness all the time. And then
one or two Northers and clear weather
and that different sky.
It used to just pull me out of my skin.
Anymore, I don’t even mind admitting it, don’t care.
Don’t mind telling you at all.
That’s a hell of a thing for someone over fifty to come to,
isn’t it.
And since I’ve been gone from Texas, somewhere
I’ll hear conjunto music and just stop. Quit
paying attention to anything. My mind end up wandering
out in the brush. He stopped suddenly.
The young one got quiet as the awareness of
all his talk settled in. Expectantly quiet.
^Que te vaya bien, eh?

fifth, Marc Flores, sixth, and Teacher Martinez.

that it’s also a tradition, and good luck, to share a
cookie with the photographer.] (Enterprise Photo.)
