BIBLE READING BRINGS THINGS INTO FOCUS
THE ENTRANCE OF THY WORDS
G/VETX Z/G/TPZX //9.20
Dear Mercedes,
Diaz, Second
Diaz, the small town.
Joven thought about that often.
Certainly not small as Winesburg, Ohio was small.
Too many large souled, experience-deep
people in Diaz.
Two world wars and two conflicts put
Diaz people out in the world.
Some came back.
They brought part of the wideness with them.
Small numbers of people, yes, not many
blocks in town, yes, few multi story buildings, yes.
But the little acts of daily life were intensified.
Even magnified and cared about.
As if a law were in effect that dictated
that how much each person mattered
was in inverse proportion to the number
of people there.
How much people mattered was large.
Diaz was physically bordered by open farm land, and
that untreed.
There were no boundaries to confine,
only those chosen by their owners.
If any boundary other than the Rio Bravo
held, it would have been the weather.
Physical weather and metaphysical weather.
Try as one might, only two weathers
sat on Diaz. Hot, and northers.
Both could have rain.
The nature of the summer heat was
such that the tempo of activity walked
a slow walk.
The milky white brightness drove all
life that had eyes indoors.
The humidity spawned mold and mildew.
A damp smell like wet weeds
seemed to always be present. Inside and out, when it was still.
Unless one was in Hanshaw’s five and dime.
That was eternal popcorn.
Or the old library, which was the perpetual change of
aging books and an oiled wooden floor.
Or the old gym with the ring tailed cat,
which was varnish and sweat.
Otherwise, wet weeds. Vegetative and loamy.
The antidote for the kids was the raspa.
Snow cones, some made by ice grinders,
some made of ice shaved by hand off a block.
A more lasting cure was water.
The main canal was much swam by naked little boys.
A private pool called Harmony Hill was
filled by bathing suited members.
As was the La Gloria.
The joven remembered jumping into the
deep end at Harmony Hill, totally unable
to swim.
He had been someone’s guest.
A big football player lifeguard named
Jack Williams pulled him out.
He remembered sputtering and puking
out pool water. Unable to see.
The fact that one had to be able to swim was
foreign to him.
He chuckled at the echo of this.
He did not want to remember the
number of times he’d jumped.
Into things, with no clue as to what to
do when he was in them.
No, he didn’t want to remember.
But the fact that they had happened didn’t
evaporate just because he didn’t care to
think about them.
Something like the weather, both
the kind outside and inside.
He thought of the deepened people
who had helped him navigate the uncertain
brooding inside weather.
In the small town of towering people.

Citizens of Mercedes;
We would like to thank ALL
those supporters who gave
their time to come out and
place Eddie Howell and Ramiro
Ramirez into office. We also
thank those who supported
Oscar Hernandez. Although
Oscar fell short by a small margin,
a statement was definitely made!
As in those infamous words of
the Terminator, Oscar said, "I'll
be back!"
We would again like to
especially THANK those
supporters who “walked” the
campaign with us everyday.
We are completely appreciative
of their efforts as they
unselfishly gave of their time
to the “commitment to
change.” There is no way we
could have won without them.
Finally, we would like to
thank all those who hosted
us at their homes or
businesses and helped in our
efforts to make this election
successful.
We WILL follow through
with our commitment to
establish a positive CHANGE
and provide the LEADER-
SHIP for FAIRNESS and
AC C 0 U NTABILITY!
GOD bless you.
