for college admissions, financial aid
consultation, and career guidance.
EARNS MASTER’S DEGREE-Michelle Pineda was graduated
on May 8 from Texas A&M University - Kingsville, earning a
Master of Science degree in Communication Sciences and
Disorders. In May 1995, she was awarded a Bachelor of
Science Degree in Communication Sciences and Disorders
from Texas Women’s University. A1991 graduate of Mercedes
High School, the graduate is the daughter of Daniel and Anita
Pineda. Maternal grandmother is Maria T. Guajardo, while
paternal grandmother is Rachel C. Pineda.
While at LDZ, Dominguez was
elected to office as a Supreme Court
Justice. In order to become a justice,
each of the two parties had to select
nine potential members. Then, nine
members were selected from the over-
all 18. Dominguez also received the
‘Ernie’ award for Outstanding Su-
preme Court Justice Member, out of
33 serving.

TO STUDY AEROSPACE
ENGINEERING — Mercedes
High School graduate Andrea
Marie Nieto will be attending
the Emry-Riddle Aeronautical
University in Daytona Beach,
Florida this fall. At the
university, she will major in
Aerospace Engineering, with a
minor in computer science.
Andrea is among only 1,000
students selected from
throughout the nation to attend
this university, which is a great
honor in itself. She is recipient
of the TSTA Scholarship and
the Embry-Riddle Scholarship.
She is the daughter of Savas
and Isabel Nieto of Mercedes.
Maternal grandparents are the
late Adan and Guillerma
Herrera and paternal grand-
parents are Mr. and Mrs.
Aniceto Nieto, all of Mercedes.
In addition, Dominguez submitted
one of four resolutions passed, after
all attending submitted one. His reso-
lution was entitled ‘Bringing Well-
Deserved Recognition to Hispanic
Heroes.’
“LDZ is worthwhile,” said
Dominguez. “When you arrive you do
not know what to expect, but the chal-
lenges and friendships brought upon
you are awesome.
“I would like to thank my sponsors
and family who enabled me to experi-
ence this once-in-a-lifetime session,”
he says.
LDZ is sponsored by the National
Hispanic Institute, a private non-profit
Rio Grande Valley Quilt Guild’s
bi-annual Quilt-a-Thon has been
scheduled for August 8 at 10 a.m. at
the First Christian Church, Sixth and
Nebraska in Weslaco.
This event is conducted to make
baby quilts for the less fortunate fami-
lies of the Valley, a spokesman says.
The quilts are given to the birthing
centers, hospitals, Mujeres Unidas/
Women Together, fire departments and
those in homeless shelters. 4
Those who enjoy sewing are in-
vited to take part, sharing their talents
for a good cause, even if they are not
members of the Guild.

Legion serves BBQ
Members of the Mercedes Ameri-
can Legion will serve plates of barbe-
cued brisket this Saturday to earn funds
for their community service projects,
says Post Commander Oscar Flores.
Serving will run from 11 a.m. to 2
p.m., at Legion Hall, 320 South Ohio.

all the trimmings will go for $3.50
each. Tickets are available in advance
from Legionnaires, and will be of-
fered in limited numbers at serving
time.

Portraits will be taken by appointment only; arrange times
through senior English, civics, or economics classes,
or make arrangements with Mrs. Gail Brandt, by calling
514-2100, Ext. 63, or by visiting the Bengal office at the
Wall of Many Colors, across from E-6 in the West English Wing.
Students will be entitled to nine poses with
three different backgrounds.
Those seniors taking portraits in
August will have their photos in
the yearbook in full color.
Late entry students will have their pictures made
September 21, but those pictures will appear
in black and white in the yearbook.
When proofs are delivered, a non-refundable
fee of $10 must be paid. Those placing orders
must turn in proper proof and one-half
of the total cost of order, tax included.
