Dear Mercedes...
Letters from F.S. Lentz, Jr.
Dear Mercedes,
Very many young boys who grew up in the tradition of
Texas men, whose root stock extended back into 19th
century roughness, played high school football.
The joven was no different.
Football was more than a sport, it was a way.
And that included not just the joven and the others who
played the game, but pretty much the whole place of Diaz.
It was a way that came to life in a season of its own.
As the cotton fields went through their second pickings
coach was judged more as a whole man rather than as a
“winning” coach or, not. It seemed...
What the joven remembered was the way of getting:
along that went with football. Some of the most humorous,
most poignant things he would see happened in football.
The first education in binding up and pulling as a smalliq
single-purposed group happened in huddles. And it wass
based on what people could really do, not what the coaches
said to do. Instant, swift democracy. A hierarchy based on
and the gin smoke hung over part of the town, summer personality, strength and ability, adolescent, yet..
practice got under way.
The players ached and sweated and did figure eight
drills until they sagged while standing. And at the end of
practice came the breath-sucking hell of wind sprints.
Many had worked a man’s day before suiting up.
Many of the boys, the joven among them, looked to the
north for the gray, cold clouds of the first norther, hoped for
it, wished for cold rain.
The reality that the joven and many of his teammates
were not physically fitted out for the game, as it should have
been played, was apparent.
He remembered thinking of himself as being made of
coat hangers.
It did not matter. You went with what you were. The
coaches did the best they could with the raw material that
grew up in the confines of the school district.
Some years provided beefy, fast, boy athletes, strong
and big and tough.
Other years yielded scrawny wiry types who had more
“guts than brains,” and only minimal muscle and who
stomped hard and moved forward very little.
A
The awful fearful fun of Lukey roaming the field house,
issuing “lashes!...” to the smaller guys with his wet towel,w
Mateo Cadena and his “needle,” Gavito Cano, the La Villas
blackbird; on the bus. La Spida, and the ghost stories, andls
the different versions of “The Battle of New Orleans,” andig
“Cotton Fields,” the meals at places like Cottons’ ins:
Robstown.
02
In all that was a shaping, a building of belief in a boyre
about himself, among the rarest of commodities.
It was not without pain.
o
Watching a friend play hurt, sometimes injured, for no
other reason than to not let his friends down, was a witness-ts
ing that stayed with him still.
He had the scars, as did most of the boys, scars that were
not intended, yet happened.
ID
To
But he also had the days, the game nights, the butterflies a
before kickoff, and some where, in some closet, the letter’d
jacket, that article of passage.
And never could he witness a norther without fast-it
The coaches had to dig deep into their resourcefulness rewinding back to the practice field in the evening and then
to field a presentable team in those years, and sometimes
they couldn’t.
It seemed to the joven in later life that the town was
understanding of the coaches’ plight in those times. The
smell of sweat and gin trash smoldering.

has conducted two seminars of invalu-
able benefit to Chamber members and
area businesses. On the evening of
June 30, the University of Texas-Pan
American’s Small Business Develop-
ment Center, Development Corpora-
tion of Mercedes, Hales, Bradford &
Allen and the First National Bank-
Mercedes Branch hosted a very infor-
mative workshop on understanding
your company’s accounting systems
and its financial operations today.
Ramiro R. Sierra, Chamber Executive
Director welcomed the participants.
Moderator was Bobbie Pacheco,
SBDC, and program presenters were
Carol Schmidt and Rudy Salinas, as-
sociates of Hales, Bradford & Allen.
The lecture was very informative and
the handouts useful.
“Business Loans are not a Myth.”
was the title of the workshop hosted
July 9 at the Mercedes Civic Center by
the UTPASBDC, One Stop Capital
Shop, U.S. Small Business Adminis-
tration, Texas State Bank,
Nationsbank, San Benito Bank &
Trust, Mercedes National Bank, the
FirstNationalBank-Mercedes and this
Chamber. The purpose of the seminar
was to dispel myths that exist about
bank and SBA loans that hinder rather
than help businesses grow, expand and
progress.
The Chamber is planning a num-
ber of workshops in the near future as
another service to our members and
business community. We hope that
you will attend all of them.
Topics being considered for the
next quarter are “Texas Employer New
Hire Reporting” and “Texas Labor
Laws,” on the evening of September
10. “Sexual harrassment in the work
place,” the “U. I. Claims,” are also
being considered for another work-
shop. We are open to the publics sug-
gestions. Individuals wishing to make
a suggestion on a topic that can help
the business community may call 565-
2221.
