Application procedures told
for winter's hunts at refuge
Dates for the 1998 white-tailed deer
hunts at Laguna Atascosa National
Wildlife Refuge have been set, ac-
cording to Project Leader Stephen E.
Labuda, Jr.
The annual archery hunt will open
December 5 and continue through
December 12. December 15 has been
set aside for blackpowder weapons.
Hunt days for modern firearms will
be December 16 through December
19.
Project Leader Labuda said that
the month of August is the time period
for issuing archery permits and for
hunters to apply for the blackpowder
or modern firearms hunts.
Procedures for obtaining refuge
hunt permits have not changed from
previous seasons. The permitting pro-
cess is simple and can be accomplished
entirely by mail. Hunters wishing to
obtain a permit for the 1998 archery
hunt should do the following:
1. Apply during the month of Au-
gust only. Applications must be post
marked no later than August 31.
2. To apply, one should write on a
standard 3" X 5" index card, his name,
address, telephone number, birth date
and a numerical identifier (Drivers
License number. Social Security num-
ber or Texas ID number).
3. Send the card to the refuge mail-
ing address along with the user fee of
$40. The $40 user fee may be a money
order or personal check payable to the
U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service.
4. Each individual hunter must send
a card. Cards and payments from sev-
eral individuals may be combined in
one envelope.
Archery permits will be issued as
the application cards are received.

TELL TALI PARK,

Gossiptown
Have you ever heard of Gossip-
town
On the shore of Falsehood Bay.
Where Old Dame Rumor with rust-
ling gown
Is going the livelong day?
It isn’t far to Gossiptown
For people who want to go;
The idleness train will take you
down
In just an hour or so.
The thoughtless road is crowded,
you’ll find,
For most folks start that way;
But it’s all downhill and, if you don’t
mind,
You’ll land in Falsehood Bay.
You glide through the valley of
Wicked Talk,
And into the tunnel of Hate;
Then, crossing the Bitterness
Bridge,
You walk through the city gate.
The principal street is called 'They
Say,”
And "I’ve Heard" is the public
well.
And the breezes that blow from
’ Falsehood Bay
Are laden with “Don’t You Tell!"
In the midst of the town is Telltale
Park—
You're never quite safe when
there;
For its owner is Madame Sus-
picious Remark,
Who lives on the street “Don't

The Promise
Sometimes we go through life not really understanding or wanting
to take notice of all the wondrous things which surround us. We pass
through life only existing and not really living or even wanting to
involve ourselves with the things the Lord has given us. It's not until
something happens in our lives that we come to a screeching halt and
try to make some sense of the madness surrounding us. Suddenly,
our little world seems to crumble and the logical become illogical
and irrational. What do we do? Where do we turn? How could
everything become so complicated all at once?
"Mi Nina." This is what I called my mother. A phrase of tenderness
and affection which she learned to recognize as a small symbol of the
strong bond existing between mother and daughter. She had been ill
for several years, but in January of this year she became completely
bedbound and in doing so, our house became a mini hospital for her.
For the next six months, our home was filled with people of various
stations from the medical community and their only concern was her
health and immediate needs. There were also people from her
Church who would faithfully visit her every week.
At first, I was completely at a loss...things which I had taken for
granted all my life were suddenly snatched away never to be
regained again. I began to go around and around in circles not really
focussing in any one area but caught up in a whirlwind of emotions.
Then one day I held Mi Nina's hands in my own and they were much
softer than I remembered...and I knew then that these hands would
never again touch the ocean surf or feel the morning dew on her face.
Her faith and acceptance of Christ was so great it was a wonder
to behold. The promise was to be fulfilled and in doing so filled our
hearts with peace, joy and the hope of things to come. Finally, on July
16, she saw the face of God and I knew she would be at peace. She
would be accompanied on her journey by our smallest angel, Angel
de Jesus, her first great-grandson, who went to Heaven in March.
I won't ever be able to feel a cool breeze softly caressing my face
or see the night seconds before the dawn light and not think of her
and her new life. How can I not live without shedding a tear or two
of joy at seeing some of these things and not be reminded of the Holy
God responsible for all these wonders. How can I not believe a
promise made so long ago by a man who would die on.a cross. The
wonders are many and the time is short but I have the courage to
continue because my mind and heart are open to the Lord. The
promise is that one day I will see "Mi Nina" again, hold her soft
hands and see the Lord's work in her eyes.
I miss her and her words of wisdom and encouragement and
these past few days I have felt an ache in my heart so painful I
thought it would break in a thousand pieces...but then I just look at
the sky and beyond. I see the first star of the evening and see the
twinkle of my mothers' eyes. I am...once again...at peace.
"I am the resurrection and the Life..."
