IT’S ALMOST SHOW TIME at the Antique Farm Machinery Exhibit of the Rio Grande
Valley Livestock Show. A.R. Dillon of Mercedes is shown at upper left driving Herb
and Don Vogel’s Model B John Deere tractor. This tractor was originally used on
the Hoblitzel Ranch, north of Mercedes. At the 60th Anniversary Stockshow, there
will be an opportunity to look back in time by visiting the Antique Farm Machinery
Exhibit. The 1917 Moline tractor at right was brought to a recent Livestock Show
by Mr. E. Kretzmar of Floresville. Of interest is the engineering difference between
the antique machines and the modern equipment that can be seen near the antique
equipment show on the grounds. Anyone wishing to show old farm equipment may
call 565-2962 for more information.

MERCEDES ENTERPRISE
POLITICAL ADVERTISING GUIDELINES
Political advertising is defined as any information meant to
influence the outcome of an election. Following are The Mercedes
Enterprise guidelines for political advertising and announcements.
— Candidates for public offices that have Mercedes within their
jurisdiction will be allowed one free “news” story announcing that
candidacy or their filing. If space is available, a photo will be allowed if
one is provided.
Candidates who live in Mercedes will be given front page space when
possible.
— No excessively harsh criticism of office holders or other candi-
dates will be allowed in this “news” story. That falls under the realm of
advertising and would have to be paid for as such. The story should
concern itself strictly with the candidate himself, his background and
qualifications.
— Further announcements of fund raisers, campaign developments,
formal filings or such, above and beyond the original announcement of
candidacy, cannot be allowed as “news,” and would need to be paid for
as advertising.
This is not meant to limit the dissemination of information, but rather
to ensure that no candidate gains a propaganda advantage over others by
virtue of being able to churn out numerous “press releases.”
Developments in any election deemed “newsworthy” by the Enter-
prise editorial staff would obviously not be subj ect to any such restriction.
—All political advertising must be paid for in advance of publication.
— State law also now requires that advertising or campaign commu-
nication must contain the word “for” if the candidate does not hold the
office for which he is running (i.e., Bill Jones for Mayor).
