THE ULTIMATE IN HAPPINESS
Dear Mercedes,
— The Suit, Continued —
The three stood at the fire, staring at the unknown person.
Had it been a hundred years before, this could have been his
last interruption.
That was speaking out of their silent faces, veiled in
mistrust, even now.
He had been mistaken for a Fed before.
Vernon introduced Lloyd, Randy and Dennis, pointing
each out.
That opened them.
Nice buck, the joven said.
Yeah, Lloyd is a one-shot wonder said Dennis, with no
smile.
You hunt he asked.
Used to, quite a bit, saidjoven, don’t have time anymore.
Do a little when I can...
What do you do asked Dennis, how did you get here...
Joven explained the unscheduled stop, tied it in with what
he did for a living.
Is that what you wanted to be when you were a kid,
a guy who travels around, who tries to convince people
to send airplane engines to Sweden to be fixed?
Joven smiled, no I wanted to be a farmer.
Well, what happened, he asked.
College, marriage, Viet Nam, kids.
That’s pretty much it, he said.
Tried to dig in after a tour in grad school, had a little
orchard.
Had a town job. The orchard froze in 83. They don’t come
back quick.
Knew some guys I flew with that were doing stuff with
airplanes.
So now, this, said Dennis.
Yeah, I make a living and I get to travel. It’s something.
I know. Started when I was a kid. Bunch of farmers and
duster pilots bought some old
world war 2 fighters in my hometown.
They used to fight on Sunday afternoons.
You could see them from our back yard.
That, and the dusters would fly low over our house.
I’ve always liked the sound of engines.
You fly in Viet Nam asked Vernon.
Yes he said and braced for the usual questions.
He sensed quickly from the way Vernon asked that
they would be knowing questions.
I was over there too, said Vernon, was a crew chief on 123s
out of Da Nang.
Oh yeah said joven, two turning and two burning.
Joven’s knowing reference to the engine scheme on that old
airplane,
two jet engines and two recips, caused a low moan from
Lloyd.
Oh God, here come the war stories, he said.
Not tonight, said Vernon, not tonight, and he winked at
joven.
What do you guys do he asked Randy.
Lloyd spoke up, we’re all in junior college over in Durango.
Randy wants to farm, me and Dennis want to start a parts
house.
Pop, he’s retarded, uh retired, from the air force.
Vernon smiled. Pop, said Lloyd, since you two showed up
late,
you skin the deer, we did the gut work,
and handed Vernon and the joven skinning knives.
I’ll watch you saidjoven. Hunted for them all my life as a
kid and never shot one.
Skinned a world of rabbits and a bobcat, but not a deer.
Close enough said Vernon, I’ll cut, you pull.
How come you never shot a deer Randy asked in disbelief.
Mostly because my Dad just wanted to get out in the brush
with his sons.
We hunted, hard and smart. There just weren’t any deer
where we were.
Then it got too expensive.
My brother got the only shot we ever took. Made the deer
laugh.
My oldest daughter got one before I did, said joven.
Well that’s all right said Vernon, that is all right.
They finished the work of skinning.
Lloyd quartered the carcass with a sharp double bitted axe,
and trimmed it with
a shiny long boot knife.
It was near midnight.
^Que te vaya bien, eh?
