At an early age, he sought success
by the world’s standards. After high
school, he began farming with forty
acres of rented land. By the time he
was 28, he had acquired over three
thousand rented acres of prime farm
land in the Rio Grande Valley. He was
“successful” measured by the world’s
standards, but by God’s standards, he
was “lost,” says Rev. Don Brynteson
of the Mercedes Christian Church. It
was at this point that he experienced a
dramatic personal encounter with Jesus
Fort Worth, where he graduated ir
May of 1975.

Adelina Agueros recently celebrated her first Birthday with a
party at home with family members and friends. She was born
July 14, 1998 at 8:30 a.m. and weighed 8 lbs., 1 oz. She is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert Agueros, and she has two
sisters, Amanda, age 15, and Annalisa, four. Paternal grandparents
are Mr. and Mrs. Santos Agueros, while maternal grandparents
are Mr. and Mrs. Jose Sanchez.
Ernesto Ybarra, who died August 14
at the age of 29.
Born in Weslaco, he attended
school in Mercedes and was employed
as a truck driver.
Survivors include his mother, Julia
Virginia T. Ybarra of Mercedes; and
four brothers, Feliberto (Irene) Ybarra
of Weslaco, Albert (Iliana) Ybarra,
Armando Ybarra and Casimiro Ybarra,
all of Mercedes.
Also surviving are seven sisters,
Sulema (Henry) Hernandez, Irene
(Larry) Lozano, Ester (Jesse) Castillo,
Simplicia Ybarra and Carolina Ybarra,
all of Mercedes, Eloisa (Rey) Elizondo
of Weslaco and Adelaida (Frank)
Gonzalez of Richardson.
Also surviving are five nieces and
six nephews.
He was preceded in death by his
father, Gerardo Ybarra, in 1982.
Funeral services were conducted
August 18 at Our Lady of Mercy Catho-
lic Church of Mercedes with Deacon
Juan Trevino officiating. Burial fol-
lowed at Zacatal Cemetery of Santa
Maria.
Pallbearers were Feliberto,
Alberto, Armando and Casimiro
Ybarra, Jesse Castillo and Frank
Gonzalez.
Funeral arrangements were under
the direction of Garcia and Trevino
Funeral Home of Mercedes.
HONORED ON 15TH BIRTHDAY — Miss Sylia Noriega of
Oklahoma City was honored on the occasion of her 1 Sth Birthday,
June 27. The Rev. Dr. David G. Runion officiated at the 6 p.m.
ceremony in the Villa de Cortez Hotel in Weslaco. Sylia is the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin Noriega of Oklahoma City, and
the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Pedro Noriega and Mike and
Maria Elena Perez of Mercedes. For her quinceahera, the honoree
wore a white, sleeveless Oscar de la Renta gown with a pearl-
beaded bodice which featured a low waistline, accented by a
satin, pink sash tied in a loose bow and adorned with roses.
Complimenting her gown was a white, silk headpiece outlined
with pearls. Her bouquet consisted of three dozen roses in
varying shades of pink. A sit-down dinner in her honor was
catered by La Amistad Restaurant of Weslaco. Sylia is a
sophomore at Western Heights High School in Oklahoma City.
She aspires to attend the University of Oklahoma and pursue a
career in nursing.

'Health Care Fair'
set August 28
Saturday, August 28 is the day for
a “Health Care Fair” at Santa Maria
Baptist Mission, reports local Baptist
minister Rev. Esteban Rodriguez.
The fair will run from 8 a.m. to 6
p.m., at the mission, located on High-
way 281 just east of Santa Maria.
To be offered are examinations for
high blood pressure and diabetes, as
well as immunizations. Other attrac-
tions will include music and “fun for
the whole family,” the pastor says.
