announce the birth of a son, Paul Christian, born at 8:54 a.m.,
September 15, in Edinburg Regional Medical Center. The
child weighed eight pounds, seven ounces at birth and was
20.5 inches in length. He joins a brother, Oscar, Jr., age seven.
Paternal grandparents are Pablo and Lydia Montoya of
Mercedes, while maternal grandparents are Guadalupe
Romo of Pharr and the late Ramon Estrada.

According to Dr. Bob Thompson,
Executive Director of the Academy,
participation is by invitation only. The
40 superintendents were chosen from
a list of over one hundred nominees
from throughout Texas.
To be selected is an honor not only
to the superintendent, Thompson
said, but also to his or her board and
district. Without the support of
forward-looking boards, and a quality increasing student
district, no superintendent could

three-day summer conference for

Workshops on quilting
sponsored by the Rio Grande Valley
Quilt Guild are still open to all quilting

Funeral services were conducted
Tuesday for. Mercedes resident
Anastacia Villarreal, who died
Monday, October 16, at the age of 89.
Mrs. Villarreal is survived by three
grandsons, Oscar Espinoza of
Jacksonville, Alabama, Jose
Herculano Espinoza and Audelia
Espinoza, both of Jacksonville,
Belinda E. Rivas and Sylvia Espinoza
of Mercedes, Hermelinda E. Esquivel
of Donna, San Juanita Espinoza and
Anita Espinoza, both of Mercedes.
Also surviving arc 29 great
grandchildren and 19 great great
grandchildren.
- She was preceded in death by her
daughter, Ofelia Villarreal, in February
Of 1973.
Funeral services took place
October 24 at Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in Mercedes with interment
at Catholic Cemetery, also in
Mercedes.
Funeral arrangements were
entrusted to Garcia and Trevino
Funeral Home of Mercedes.
