4-H Youth Is in Busy Preparation for
Biggest Industry in United States
Would you believe that farm-
ing employs 6 million workers—
* Scores of the nation’s success;
---iul farmers today got their start
in 4-H, according to the Coopera-
tive Extension: Service which
lieve it. Farming is the biggest
industry in the U. S. What’s
the 4-H „Field Crops program are already in partnership with
sponsor, Arcadian Products De- their dads or are renting acreage
more than the combined employ-
ment in transportation, public
utilities, the auto industry and
the steel industry? That one
farm worker produces food
fiber and other farm commodi-
ties for himself and 35 others?
The U. S. Department of Agri-
culture says you had better be-
more, American agriculture has
advanced more in the last 50
years than in all the prior years
of our history.
In these last 50 years the na-
tion’s 4-H Club members have
kept up with the new agricul-
tural practices and have produc-
ed their share of food and fiber.
supervises 4-H Club work.
Right about 'now some 106,-
000 young 4-H farmers are get-
ting ready to harvest‘crops in-
cluding corn, oats, soybeans,
sugar beets, cotton, sorghum,
milo, alfalfa, and truck garden
produce of sweet potatoes, to-
matoes, cabbage and squash.
In' the process, several thou-
sand. compete for' county, state
and national awards provided by
partment. Allied Chemical Cor-
poration.
These junior farmers don’t
just plant the seeds and reap
the harvest. They make soil
tests, practice conservation by
rotating and terracing, restore
arid and eroded land, learn to
judge crops, maintain farm ma-
chinery, and also study market-
ing.
Many of the older 4-H’ers have
outpaced more experienced
farmers with higher yields. Some
their dads or are renting acreage
on their own.
With the aid of 4-H scholar-
ships provided by Allied Chemi-
cal, six young people each year
are helped with college expens-
es, agricultural short courses
or other educational endeavors.
The 1966 scholarship winners
will be chosen from among all
state award winners. They will
be announced next fall during
the National 4-H Club Congress
which they will attend. About 5,-
000 members are expected to re-
