Things you may not know about Hepatitis
Hepatitis is a term that means
inflammation of the liver and can
result from many things. Toxins
including too much alcohol are a
very common cause. Many medica-
tions can cause inflammation of the
liver and these include aceta-
minophen, cholesterol lowering
medicines and antifungal medicines.
Bacteria, fungi and parasites can
cause hepatitis but fortunately rarely
happens. In the United States, most
infectious causes of hepatitis are
viral and include five main types
(A,B,C,D, or E). Infections from
these viruses range from having no
symptoms at all to liver failure,
coma and death. Hepatitis A is usu-
ally a short term illness while
Hepatitis B, C and D are usually
long-term and many times fatal.
Hepatitis E is rare and has not been
found in anyone in this country who
has not traveled outside of our bor-
ders.
Hepatitis A is found in an infected
person’s stool and is usually spread
in food that has been contaminated
by their unwashed hands. Shellfish,
including oysters that are living in
areas where raw sewage drains into
bays can also infect when eaten.
Hepatitis A has an approximately
four-week incubation period (the
time between exposure and the start
of symptoms).
Hepatitis B is spread through con-
tact with infected saliva, blood,
tears, breast milk, urine, semen and
vaginal secretions. Blood contami-
nation is usually the result of trans-
fusions or contaminated needles

from the use of illegal drugs. This
virus can be passed through sexual
contact and even from mother to
baby during birth. Some people
infected with Hepatitis B have no
symptoms (Hepatitis B Carriers)
and can pass this disease on to many
others without knowing it. The incu-
bation period of Hepatitis B is from
two to six months.
Hepatitis C is a relatively new
name and used to be called “non-A
non-B Hepatitis” before a specific
virus was found to cause it. Most
Hepatitis C in the U.S. is transmitted
through contaminated drug needles
(illegal drug users and health care
workers who accidentally stick
themselves). Prior to 1992 when
new screening tests were imple-
mented, this virus was easily spread
through blood transfusions. Approx-
imately 40 percent of Hepatitis C
cases in the U.S. have no identifi-
able cause. The incubation period is
approximately two months.
The incubation period of Hepatitis
D is three months and to date has not
caused infection without someone
already having Hepatitis B. This begins with a medical history. This |
