9 September 1988 -A MEMORABLE DAY
FOR T-PATCHERS
AT DEDICATION
By Harold Owens
36th Division veterans had
memorable day September 9.
September 9, 1988, 45th anniver-
sary of the landing at Salerno, was a
memorable day for the 36th Division
veterans, and others who returned to
Paestum for the monument unveiling
ceremony.
The 36ers, their spouses, and
others visited with the hilltop
townspeople of Altavilla, site of a ma-
jor battle following the landing; they
identified recognized landmarks
while riding over the plains of Saler-
no, they walked in small groups over
the sandy invasion beaches, they
strolled along the medieval Greek
Temples, some looked at exhibits in
the museum, and slowly gathered in
the crowded Paestum Park during the
afternoon, for the dedication
ceremony of the monument, shaped
like a miniature Washington monu-
ment.
First marched in the Italian town
band, followed by the 36th Division
veterans wearing their T-PATCH
Caps, the British veterans, families,
US National Guard Band, town of-
ficials, the Italian Military Parade Unit
with their snappy black, feathered
headgear.The impressive ceremony and the
laying of flowers and wreaths were
solemnly observed by the audience.
Thanks to Robert Nowell, Julian H.
Philips and other 36th Division
Veterans, people of Paestum and
others for the successful monument
building and dedication, a lasting
memorial to those who sacrificed all
in the invasion and presented by
those who sacrificed, but survived
the hardships of many battles and liv-
ed to contribute to the monument.
Panaorama, US Naval Support Ac-
