A Fayette County lady will have a
chance to show off what is believed
to be the largest fruitcake every
made on the nationally televised
Johnny Carson Show.
Gladys Farek of Cistern, who
made the 5 ft. by 6 ft. confection, has
been invited to appear on the
Wednesday, Dec. 27 show.
Mrs Farek and her bakery crew
were busy making the cake last
week.
She was given an all-expense paid
trip for two to Los Angeles for three
days and will be flying the 150-pound
cake shaped like Texas to California
also.
Johnny Carson has been making
jokes about fruitcakes for years,
saying that he believes there is
really only one fruitcake - and that
it’s passed from one person to
another each year.
This apparently world’s largest
fruitcake will certainly prove that
there's at least one other fruitcake
around - one that's too big to be
passed around from one Christmas
season to another.
Mrs Farek was asked if she
thought she could pursuade Johnny
that there really is a good fruitcake
She replied that she thought she
could persuade the devil to go to
heaven, so the fruitcake persuasion
should be no trouble.
Mrs Farek's giant fruitcake
weighs 150 pounds and is the fifth
such cake she has baked. She was
also going to take two smaller cakes
shaped like the state of California to
give to Johnny and Ed McMahon.
Mrs. Farek, who is 55, has been
making fruitcakes for 15 years at her
small bakery at Cistern. She has
perfected a cake that has more
pecans than other fruitcakes, and
doesn't contain any raisins, citron or
spices. Fifty percent of her
fruitcakes are pecan, mixed with
glazed cherries and pineapples,
along with just enough eggs and
flour to keep the whole thing
together, she says.
Most of the cakes and cookies she
bakes are sold through clubs and
schools as fundraising projects
Some are also sold through mail
order and at retail stores all over the
state. And some people make it a
point each holiday season to travel
from the big city out to Cistern to
buy her fruitcakes. She bakes about
five tons each holiday season
Mrs. Farek was really excited
about being able to appear on TV.
She said she has long dreamed of
being on the Johnny Carson Show
Now her dream has come true.
Going along with her to Los
Angeles are two of her oldest
friends, Otto and Helen Steinhauser
of Flatonia, who also work in her
business
