1. Civilian-garbed, hat in hand,
Adolf Hitler, meets dress-uni-
formed Benito Mussolini for the
first time, June 14, 1934. Hitler
flew to Italy to establish "per-
sonal contact which the chiefs
of the two nations believe would
be valuable." They pledged Aus-
tria's independence
2. Der Fuehrer shows la Duce the sights of Bar-
lin, September, 1937. Hitler's nazis put on one of
the greatest spectacles ever seen, parading young
nanisms might before "the Father of Fascism.”
Meeting was intended to impress England and
France with the solidarity of the Rome-Berlin
axis, make a four-power peace pact with Ger-
many and Italy look attractive.
3. The boys got together again in Rome in May,
1938. Mussolini remembered the show his fellow-
dictator had put on in Berlin for him, went him
one better with a tremendous swatista-bedecked
Roman holiday. They talked over plans for con-
quest of Europe, decided against an immediate
military alliance. Il Duce still wanted four-power
treaty with Allies.
4. The meeting was written in blood-ink in the
annals of history-Munich, September 29, 1938.
Here “appeasers" swallowed the hook, line and
linker of “peace in our time." Here Czechoslo-
vakia, the Allies eastern bulwark, wu surrendered.
Hitler, left, stood quietly, while Mussolini, center,
and Marshal Goering excitedly point out new
frontiers on the maps, planned more changes
S. The mystery meeting in II Duces private rail-
road car at Brenner Pass, March 18, 1940. An un-
expected get-together at a critical time, what the
dictators talked about was long unknown, but for
worried democracies. It boded no good.. Hitler
emerged with II Duces promise to fight beside him
when and if needed Mussolini kept that promise,

FOOD FOR WEEKS’
Undoubtedly the British will do
exactly that If the German threat
of invasion is carried out And with
some two million men already un-
der arms, the little island should
give a good account of Itself.
There still remains, however, the
grim and perhaps more dangerous
threat of starvation through the air
and submarine blockade which the
Germans intend to impose with all
their power England is dependent
on sea-borne imports for more than
seventy-five percent of her food-
stuffs.
British Food Minister Lord Wool-
I ton informed the house of lords
I Wednesday that the country has
| enough of the most essential foods
■ to last “for weeks and weeks " even
if nothing else comes into the
country. He added
"Up and down the country. In
places we hope have been kept
secret, we have iron rations to be
used only in great emergency."
That statement was meant to be
reassuring, but it scared me. Food
supplies for "weeks and weeks"
aren’t sufficient for a country of
more than forty-six million popula-
tion under siege

The Duke of Windsor's secretary
said the former king of England
and his duchess would remain in
Barcelona until tomorrow and
then would go to Madrid There,
the secretary added, the duke “will
communicate with his government ”
in Madrid, it was reported they
probably would travel to England
later by way of Lisbon.
Operations continued on the east-
ern frontier of Libya, Italy's North
African colony, the communique
said, and while land activities were
limited to “a small tactical field” it
was claimed that Italian airplanes' ended
had destroyed 10 Allied planes and
40 British tanks.
The conununique claimed that
Italian planes had raided the British
air base at Mersa Matru in Egypt
and it said enemy planes raided the
Italian base at Javello lut night,
causing little damage.
It wu claimed that anti-aircraft
guns shot down two British planes.
One Allied plane, it was said,
raided Imperia on the Italian Ri-
viera but only one bomb was drop-
ped and in open country, causing
no damage and no casualties.
Italian planes continued close

bombing distance of every port in
the United Kingdom.
Another grave aspect of the sit-
uation is that England's industries
are crowded into the southern half
of the country within fairly easy
raiding distance.
It will be strange if Hitler doesn't
go “all out" in bombing shipping,
ports, and industrial centers in an
effort to strangle England. To this
task also win be assigned his fleet
of submarines which undoubtedly
has been increased considerably in
recent weeks. Actual invasion would
be risky before the ground had been
prepared In this way.
That's the German aide of the pic-
ture. and it must look rosy to them.
The vital task of the British will be
to beat off that nazi air fleet. Eng-
land reports that she is stronger in
the air as compared with the Ger-
mans than she was at the outbreak
of the war She also has a powerful
anti-aircraft defense. And there is
her vast navy.
