It’s a striking piece of news, which
with some variations you have read
from time to time through the past
week: That President Roosevelt has
decided at long last if he will seek
or accept the democratic nomina-
tion; that he has confided his de-
cision to Jim Farley on a cross-his-
heart-and-hope-to-die promise not
to tell; that nobody else knows, and
won’t until some stage of the demo-
cratic convention.
To be sure it is just a matter of
Franklin D. Roosevelt’s personal
business. None of the thousand-odd
delegates from the 48 states should
be concerned. None of the 130,000,-
000 citizens of the United States is
interested to know if FD will at-
tempt to smash precedent. Let ’em
wait.

Jovial Jim Farley, for instance, is
going to assume the business helm
of the New York Yankee baseball
team. Suppose the Yankees rally
and win the American league pen-
nant, and it is early October, the
Sunday or Monday before the world
series is due to open on Wednesday.
This is the sort of news report we
may expect on the situation:
James A. Farley, business head of
the Yankees, today continued • to
sidestep questions of reporters on
the plans of his team to engage
in the world series. Farley and his
field manager, Joe McCarthy, com-
ferred yesterday, and McCarthy was
told if the Yanks would play the
National leaguers or not, but re-
fused to divulge the secret.
It was regarded likely that an-
nouncement would not be made un-
til just before scheduled opening of
the game. If the Yanks do not play,
the assignment to face the National
flag /winners may go to the Cleve-
land Indians, who finished second
in the American league race.
The Yankees have been world,
baseball champions fours successive
years, and there has been no end
of speculation throughout the sea-
son over their trying for a fifth
term.
